Why has character customization been limited to you being an 11 year old kid with limited clothing and hair/color options?

Battle Revolutions system is perfect, allowing you to create original but still fairly preset trainers. Forcing a story and narrative where youre a brand new squeeky clean trainer is killing off a fun opportunity to travel as a trainer you actually identify with
