I think people just want ANY kind of battle facility that isn't just a straight battle tower clone.

Yeah, except that both Emerald and Platinum had Battle Frontiers, each one with its own exclusive facilities (except for Battle Tower and Battle Factory).

Unova instead had the PWT where you could select which battle you want: Singles, Doubles, Triples, Rotation, Rentals, Mixed (you and the opponent change Pokémon), Gym Leaders of specific region, all Gym Leaders, and Champions. All these battles with the same rules that Battle Tower/Subway/Maison/Tree has.

While Kalos had!: ...Battle Tower/Subway with another name... that appears in all games since Crystal... ...but trainers now can use HAs...

And Alola has!: ...again... the Battle Tower/Subway/Maison with another name... only change is that opponents can now use Mega Evolutions and Generic Z-Moves... Red and Blue are now the strongest trainers... also the Battle Royal Dome... which ends the battle as soon as one trainer's Pokémon are defeated... ...and has an extreme lag due to high poly models... (New 3DS has less lag but it's still having lag)
