If Game Freak had anything new to show, they wouldn't be showing the same scenes from Sun and Moon with a trainer wearing slightly different clothing. No one is getting hype from seeing Lilly fail to cross the same bridge again.
Follower Pokemon would be exactly the right thing to show if they wanted people to get excited for the next re-hash. And the fact that they haven't showed it so close to release leads me to believe it's just not a part of the game.
Either that or they're going to half-ass it and make it exclusive to the Pikachu line, and then only in this one area.
