It's as good/bad as you found Ruby and Sapphire, except with more characterisation of the villainous teams, XY's online features, upgraded secret bases, a short postgame and some other quality of life changes.

They have problems but they're all right. In my opinion they're the weakest games in the entire core series without a doubt. Still, they're by no means bad games. If given the option of playing ORAS, RS, or Emerald, I'd pick Emerald every time. One of my main criticisms of ORAS is how they didn't incorporate many of the changes from Emerald the way that HGSS did with Crystal. Because of this, ORAS feels like a downgrade from Emerald to me.

I consider myself to be the target demographic for this remake. I started the games in gen 2 but gen 3 is really when my pokemania was at its maximum hype as a kid. I was mostly impressed with how they incorporated mega evolution into the plot without making it seems too in your face. My only real issue was the welfare lati before the 6th gym which i just ended up boxing.

To be fair they needed to shove it in there to make soaring a thing. Sure they could have just made it summon someone else's without actually capturing it (like ride pokemon in SM) but people would have complained about not being able to catch it

They're the best 3DS games by far, although that's not difficult considering its only competition are XY and SM. And unless USUM really improves the Alola region and tones down the railroading, it will probably continue to be the best 3DS game. It's flaws get exaggerated a lot and it should have added some of Emerald's features but otherwise it's probably the 4th or 5th best game in the series (whether you put it above Emerald depends on whether you value quality of life features and general improvements that the series has made since then over the battle frontier and improved gym leader/trainer teams).

Although one thing I really didn't like is how the game teleports you to where you need to go after you beat Flannery and after you beat Norman. One of the great things about the Hoenn region is how well connected it is. Once you beat Flannery, you were free to explore the desert and Fiery Path. Alternatively if you don't want to explore you can just take a shortcut through Rusturf Tunnel. In ORAS May turns up and teleports you (although admittedly this one was optional). But when you get Surf, the region really opens up for you. If you want the shortest route, you can just cut across from Oldale. Otherwise you can Surf down to Dewford/Slateport and battle trainers there. You can check out parts of the abandoned ship, you can check out parts of Meteor Falls, you can check out that island north of Rustboro, or you can power through the game. But then Wally turns up and teleports you straight to Mauville. You can still backtrack after this but I hate how Game Freak have taken one of the most well connected regions in the series and tried to dumb it down and railroad the player. I can excuse the general difficulty being closer to RS rather than Emerald and I can excuse getting handed an OP legendary halfway through the game but this is something that really annoys me.

Game Freak would rather rush out an incomplete game than wait a year and release a finished game. It's clear that XY and ORAS could have been improved with an extra year's worth of development and assuming that USUM end up being better than SM and it's not a sequel with radical changes, we will have proof that SM were rushed so that they could be pushed out for the 20th anniversary despite being sub-par.

Although the fact that people claim that the lack of a Battle Frontier alone makes it one of the worst games in the series shows how braindead this board is. One person will write a relatively well-written post here and then it will be parrotted by a number of other people who just copy the same argument to sound smart without really thinking about it. It's not just arguments about ORAS, pretty much every thread about every game ends up being the same shit over and over again. And the people who regurgigate old arguments clearly have no idea what they're talking about.

This kinda bothers me. I'm all for Archie and Maxie getting some sort of redemption and turning their teams into legit helpful organizations but fuckers almost destroyed the region, stole a submarine, and many other crimes. I know police are a joke in Pokemon guys because "since we are peaceful we can be weak" (Alola's police), but still. Kinda makes you wonder if Looker ever stopped the amnesia thing and said "eh you are cool now sure"

I understand taking out the Game Corner, but a bunch of other things were either taken out (all of Emerald's features and new characters; the grandmas in the hot spring of Lavaridge Town), had things cut back (New Mauville only being available after getting the National Dex and being reduced in size; the Trick House having less puzzles; no replacement for the e-reader house trainers), and blatantly copy-pasted content from XY (everything in the PlayNav and the trainer rosters in the Maison as a whole).

And why is that? BECAUSE MASUDA TRIED TO COMPETE FOR THE AUDIENCE OF MOBILE GAMES WHO WOULD HAVE NO DESIRE TO GO AND GET A 3DS IN THE FIRST PLACE!

At least they fixed RSE's lackluster plot and greatly expanded Hoenn's lore, as well as made Contests and Secret Bases more fun.
