Why does weird shit always happen to Gastrodon? He always seems to find a weird spot in higher tiers (even in ubers some gens) but has been bottom tier in every gen except for BW. Would stealth rock cement his spot in higher tiers properly or is he a forever weird nichemon? I wonder how he would have done if he were actually released in gen 3 like he was intended to be.

This typing and stat distribution combo will always be useful, assuming its checks are considered. Grass is not a common attacking type.

Main answer: people are sheep and follow trends. I'm not even an anti-smogonfag, I've played OU long enough to see that tier shifting mainly comes about when someone who puts their team out there ends up stirring a bunch of copypasting that gives mons their usage. A shit ton of mons are viable in OU, but there aren't nearly enough builders who know how to properly use a mon.
You'll find that creativity maps to Elo like 2 skinny waves with a massive dip in the middle, where the waves consist of people who play whatever the fuck they want at the bottom of the ladder and people making underrated mons or their favorites or trying something new at the top of the ladder.
Gastrodon is a great answer in the meta to the likes of Greninja, Tapu Koko, Zapdos, non-CM Magearna, and Mega Diancie. Not to mention, a lot of teams either don't run an out or can easily lose their out to Curse Gastrodon.

Historically Gastrodon has always been important as a counter rain, and as such his viability is mostly dependent on how common rain teams are. Not that he's a bad pokemon without rain, definitely better than fucking PU.

Gastrodon has always been one of my favorites. I use mine regularly in a lot of online competitions in both singles and doubles. My set was made years ago with a specific EV spread for countering what I can't remember, but it's been able to tank hits and knock out mons way more than you would expect.

Many Water types are considered good in OU but can't manage to rise consistently in usage. Other examples: Alomomola, Mantine, Quagsire, Suicune, Slowbro and so on.

Basically these. Bulky waters are a dime a dozen. I believe there was something similar for Tangrowth before it became a staple for dealing with stuff like Koko and Zygarde.
