This was a looooooooong time ago, but I still remember as if it happened 5 minutes ago. I think it was my second nuzlocke too.

In recent memory, I think it was a battle in X. I think it was the Mienfoo battle before that one cave. I had a team that just wasn't capable of beating fighting types, especially not Mienfoo.

Long story short, and 4 dead mins later I walked away with a flabebe that was still underleveled and a Frogadier

Not complaining, Zigzagoon is great with Headbutt. And it picks up Rare Candies and other things to sell.

Heading into the Glazed midgame, what should I expect? Already lost some promising members (Croagunk, Shroomish, Haunter, Zubat) to surprises like Jolteon, Machamp/Conkeldurr and Gabite, vanilla trainers being higher level than my entire team didn't help either.

Current team is Monferno, Vulpix, Porygon, Beldum, Pichu and Buizel, just entered the third gym at level 22-28 across the board. Planning to get that Pichu to Raichu and Thunderbolt everything non-resistant to kingdom come, so I guess a lot of grinding is the order of the day.

You have a long way to go to reach mid game. I had to take a break after the fourth gym in Johto. Too much toll. But I will come back to complete it.

Anyways, be wary of the Seaspray Gym Leader anon. She fucked my team cause I underestimated her. Raichu will be your best bet. I'll put a spoiler just incase

Her fucking Kingdra set up DDs and Outraged my shit, didn't help that she had Leftovers too good luck anon

Thanks for the advice. I guess that level 5 Beldum will need to be a Metang too, tanking Outrage without a fairy is not a prospect I'm looking forward to.

I still have no idea how I managed to get a Beldum, I figure that its catch rate was increased in this game. Porygon is the hero of the run so far, it even helped in that catch thanks to Conversion shifting it to Ghost and preventing the thing from killing itself with recoil.

I feared that the lack of electric resistance would hurt for the first gym, but Trace was funny for Jolteon, even after it revealed HP Fighting. Yeesh, wouldn't have wanted to have a Magnemite or something up against that.

Any tips for leveling in Fire Red?
Currently doing a FR nuzlocke, grinding new folks from 10-20 to 30-32 minimum. Any tips for grinding spots?
I have a few such as

Whismur because it was level 19 and wanted it to evolve after battle (yeah I should have just waited)

Now this may seem really really stupid, but I only had Sapphire growing up as a kid. And you fought Archie instead of Maxie at Mt. Chimney.

So for some reason, I thought he would have Carvanha or Sharpedo. Whichever one Archie had. And was saving Electrike for that.

But it didn't actually hit me until he sent out Camerupt, and thought, "I'm fucking dumb". I think this was the first time actually playing Emerald, and not Sapphire.

So my team was a little beat up before I entered the cave because I forgot about the healer by the entrance.

Butterfree went down first while I was trying to catch a Onix to a crit Rock Tomb; Sleep Powder didn't connect. Next I sent out my Espurr, seeing as it was the only thing that could potentially damage the thing without killing it and getting KO'd back. Boy was I wrong. Crit Rock Tomb KO'd my Espurr from 3/4 HP.

I decided to kill the Onix and move on. Then I got to those Flare faggots. Out comes Houndour, who, because I hadn't reorganized my party, is facing off against my Grotle. Not good. I switch out to Pidgeotto, and the thing goes for Howl. Well, should be okay, right? Pidgeotto almost gets the KO, but Houndour clings on in high red HP. Crit +1 Bite kills my bird.

I switch to my Fletchinder and take it down. Next comes Zubat, who is easily dispatched. Charmeleon, having the highest HP, leads the pack now. I take on the next Grunt whose Gulpin poisons me with Sludge before I take it down (regret not picking up Dragon Rage). Electrike is sure to outspeed and KO, so I go to Fletchinder without thinking, and my other bird falls. Grotle comes in and finishes it up, after getting knocked to yellow HP from mid-green.

The team-fight with Serana is where I lost. I sent out Grotle because I didn't have any Antidotes. Grotle gets crit by the Croagunk, and goes down. My weakened Charmeleon went down next.

Basically, crits and my no-items rule fucked me hard.

Ahhhh that makes a lot of sense. It's not in your ruleset.

That's definitely heartbreaking. Will you be re-running it after Sun? Or wait until US comes out and play that after Sun?

My template's been changing as I develop it; it'll be in the Sun one when I start that in a bit. Just gotta plan and heal at every opportunity I get; E4 will be an actual challenge if I can't heal HP/status in-battle.

I was going to get around to updating it after I updated the likns for the Official Games and Emulator Links pastebins

But I haven't played a whole lot of ROM hacks, so I didn't know which ones to put there and which ones to not.

Made it to Azalea Town. Went and got my encounters in Slowpoke Well and Ilex Forest. Trained some in the forest, then defeated the grunts in the well.

Wanted to grind more in the forest, but I guess I forgot the rival appears after the Slowpoke Well event, and not after defeating the gym.

A little scary, but only lost Snorunt. Now I'm gonna train a bit more before taking on Bugsy. I am loving my team so far, and was pretty stoked that Eevee evolved into an Espeon.

Beat back Blaine and Giovanni with really nothing exciting to tell? Hitmonchan is finally being useful now he knows Submission, but I have to be careful with it. Annoying that he can't learn any other fighting move.

Made all the way through Victory Road too. No casualties! Almost lost Screech though, to a Exeggutor spamming Sleep. Got past though.

What's a suitable level to grind to now?

mid 40s is pretty much fine for Red's E4 but to be on the safe side I'd say raise em all up to mid 50s

So I made it to Goldenrod. Went to the Game Corner and saw that a Dratini costs 2100 Coins. Literally spent all my money to buy her. Trained everyone up to 30-35 and went to take on Whitney.

I almost lost the run. Shaw and Avalon both only had 15HP~ by the end of her battle. And it sucks cause Dragonair fucking died. And my Frogadier, too. Shit suuuuucks.

But on the bright side, I am now further than I have ever been in this game. And I get 6 more encounters before Ecruteak? I think five.

Well, I did it. I beat Red! E4 was an absolute joke to be perfectly honest. Not a single on gave me any problem. Click, even though I was incredibly unsure, really actually helped. Drogon took out the majority of Blue's team.
Oceania though was the main star. She destroyed Lance and Blue! time to move everyone onto Retirement, and start up Blue in the morning!

Lost my Golem and Magnezone in the fight against Bruno, and those losses were felt in the battle against Lance, where I had to soak up much of the damage from his Dragonites with Tentacruel and Togetic, who both succumbed.

But Magmar, Damn my Magmar was a fucking hero, I almost didn't bother grinding her up, but she handled all that was sent her way.

...And my Poliwrath was there to see it all, I suppose. Her finest hour (or not) is ahead.

Beat the first trial without issue. Yancy put Gumshoos to sleep and nearly took it out after a couple of Wing Attacks. I had Mako come in and finish it off after.

Went on to Route 3 where I lucked out and found a Rufflet. Never used it before so I was intent on catching it. Yancy knocks it into the yellow but it calls for help. I proceed to cycle through my entire party trying to tank hits from two birds but it doesn't work. Lasa goes down accidentally and Rainytits went down after I managed to KO the other Rufflet. Caught the bastard with a Great Ball at least, but damn if that wasn't annoying.

Do the mons you keep in the box all game still get retired at the end?

If so, it might be worth it to sacrifice a lot of underleveled mons out of your box before the elite four -- I can foresee you wishing you had things like, say, Magikarp available for future runs.

Lost a few good 'mons.

Mankey caught me off-guard during the Grand Trial.

Flinchhax (Bite caused flinch 3x in a row) from Gladion's Zubat lost me my Rockruff.

And a couple of fucking Pikipek cost me my Butterfree because Pluck hit like a motherfucker. I don't expect early-game bugs to stick around for too long, but it's always sad when they do go.

Also, which Eeveelution should I evolve the little guy into?

Tonight's only real update.
Got a caterpie, named BUGBUGBUG in honour of previous fallen hero in Red, BUGBUGBUG. Missed out on an Abra. I really needed to get another encounter, so powered through route 25, and went to Route 5, where I got FettyWap, the Bellsprout.
Grinding everyone to 20-22 for Misty

Lately I've been giving up in the middle of nuzlockes. Not because I lost, or because it's difficult. I just lose the motivation to play. I have 2 runs right now, and I don't feel like playing them.

Do I need a more challenging hack? Am I growing out of this? Like, I WANT to nuzlocke. It's fun, and I like the experience.

current fave is Theta Emerald, because of the whole gen 1-6 pool, the increased challenge and exp gains making grinding less annoying. the move pools and chance to get abilities like speed boost on torchic are much better. i mean out of 3 torchics 2 of them had speed boost.
honestly, something that helps me stay invested is i ask fellas in this thread for naming themes and what not, and after each gym i make an update picture of my team. keeps it fun and less grueling for me
if you want a challenge with some neato features and what not, bloody platinum is a good hack.

In my last emerald run I was so fucking lucky. Got absol and gardevoir by rngesus's grace, sceptile, aggron, flygon and a sharpedo. Was over near the shoal cave battling those trainers for levels before I faced the twins... My absol, gardevoir and aggron all got crit OHKOd by a trainer duo. I wanted to cry.

Another time I was nuzlocking I think leaf green(which ever has growlithe).. I had lost my nidoking and gyradose on the SS Anne, so I had to train some new pokes so come Erika I still had a charmeleon... She got a crit kill on him. Managed to get a growlithe... He got crit killed before I was ready to evolve him. Couldn't get flareon due to replacing gyradose with vaporeon... Only fire type left was ponyta... Nope flooded with Persians

Trainer card last number=starter
Faint=death
1st Pokémon per route only
No dupes clause
No legendaries clause

Personal clause: can use gift Pokémon, but must skip next 3 route catches

No nickname clause cuz I'm a button mashing forgetful bitch when I catch my Mons and the rule is useless anyway.

Journey so far: bulbasaur missed 1/3 tackles all the way to Brock. So annoying and cost me my ratatta. In the rock tunnel now

The one that was the most evil was thinking about having the rival ambush the player inside of the Pokemon Center before they give them a chance to heal. Particularly after a very long cave or dungeon, for example Mt. Moon. What are some ideas you guys have, I'd be interested in hearing them.

If have you basic Pokemon knowledge you can win no matter what situation you're placed in. There isn't a difficult fight during the whole game, and the only remotely challenging bit would be the trek through Mt. Moon due to how it can wear you down fast.

Will be nuzlocking Gold with Cyndaquil once it goes live here in the states. A few questions:

Update here. After hearing about an honest-to-goodness Kingdra in the third gym, and Wilbur still deciding to remain as a Pichu even at level 40, I decided to implement plan B. Plan B involved the fact that Metang evolves at level 45 rather than 55 like the other pseudo-legendaries, and the other fact that the lighthouse challenge is a giant experience pinata once you can reliably clear it.

Turns out that Flo is atrocious even with a Metagross in tow, Kingdra decided to dragon dance itself to death but Surf/Recover Milotic was no joke. Thankfully it's now over with no fatalities, and the next leader is a grass specialist so Ethan (Ninetales) and Brian (Monferno) will be great here. There's even a rematchable trainer with Tangela, Tangrowth and Skiploom, and not even the rain can save their godawful special defense from Fire Blast, so free experience all around.

I've started a new Heart Gold Randomizer and I'm planning to keep going for all 16 badges and Red. Will it be difficult? Most likely (although I have had some great encounters so far).
Pic related is my current team, with their names chosen by a random string generator. I got 'Zeedick' the Dialga as my Sprout Tower encounter and caught it on the first ball, which was lucky. I'm not planning on using him properly unless I get BTFO'd, but I'll keep him trained up.
Highlight of the team so far is 'Mr T' the Linoone. Got him after a Route 29 Weedle evolved. He learned Judgement shortly after and now he kills everything.
I'll probably update after each Badge (if I can remember) so if you want to follow along with my inevitable failure, go ahead

Back when I was doing an all regions run right before XY came out my Black 1 run was like that. I lost every a ton of my of my favorite Pokémon every single battle due to a critical hit. I have not lost more Pokémon during a Nuzlocke before or since then, and I've beaten some real stupid shit like BS Platinum and Kaizo Emerald.

Glazed report: Wiped on Nicole. Decided not to grind anything after getting everyone to 35 (and Metagross at 48), just bumrushed into every gym with acceptable results. Wilbur finally decided to be a Pikachu on the very next level, and there wasn't much that could stop Raichu, Ninetales and Metagross.

Except, of course, a critical EQ from Rhyperior followed by Cradily getting three ancientpower boosts in a row. That would put a bit of a damper on things, yessir, sure does. Should've grinded for Meteor Mash, but oh well, better luck on next run.

Tried to do a Pokemon Silver Nuzlocke run where I only used Balls given or found, nothing bought.
Quickly ran out of balls. Did the math, impossible to try and catch one poke per route/area. And by the time you get to GoldenRod you are at -3 Balls.

Thinking that the best way to resolve this is to encounter a pokemon in a new area, and if it is a trash poke, just kill it and skip the route/area.

OR

Use Balls made by Kurt, though admittedly that severely limits play-time as you can only get 1 ball per day which results in progression being limited to 1 route/area per day in the real world.

Thoughts?

Nonarylocke; starter gets a number of zero (or 9 if you really want) and your first eight pokemon caught get assigned numbers one through eight. Nah, digital roots are easy. You just add up the digits of all the Pokemon, and if the result is greater than 9, add up the resulting number. So 9 + 6 + 7 = 22, and 2 + 2 = 4, so it's a proper team for the fourth gym.

The idea is stolen from 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, which is a pretty great visual novel and is available on PC if the concept interests you.

The BW2 early game is the worst of any nuzlocke by far. There literally aren't enough battles before Cheren to level anything except your starter, and most of the mons available to capture are so trash they aren't worth leveling in the first place.

Oh look, another one of these. Joining the bandwagon a bit late. Guess I'll do this until I never want to look at a Pokemon game again.

Red's done. Blasted through it in around 6-8 hours and didn't make a template until now. It went okay. Pretty much all the deaths were because of turbo abuse. Dear sweet Hot Pink the Wigglytuff was taken before retirement by Sheer Cold from Lorelei's Lapras. Copper the Kabutops was killed in the champion battle by Gyarados' Hydro Pump. Hitmonlee did nothing the entire game and I think I fucked myself by retiring it so early.

I plan on doing stuff like monotype and wedlockes eventually but I want to get through Gen 1 quick and save the more interesting rules for games that aren't shit.

Blasted through Blue in around 4 hours so no updates sorry. I'm trying to get through Gen 1 as quick as possible because it's not particularly fun to play and no matter what it'll be piss easy.

The No PC rule was pretty fun. Couldn't deposit items so I was stuck with stuff like the SS Anne ticket the whole game. It forced me to not horde rare candies and TMs like I usually would. Golem carried the team hard. Not being able to use it in Johto will be interesting. Victrebel was a lot more useful than Vileplume ever was. Both the non-bulba Misty killers are retired so that'll be fun to deal with later.

Quick update, right after Oxalis City I caught Marill and trained everyone up to level 12. But before I could reach to Mound Cave, there was a trainer with a Pineco. So I sent out Sentret to take the Explosion.

The very next trainer killed Marill with Pursuit as I was trying to swap out. Wanted to kill myself. Anyways, I entered Mound Cave, which was a doozey because I didn't have any Electric Pokemon or Electric-type attacks, but it wasn't too bad trying to make my way through. The rival was pretty easy.

Almost wiped to Pink Patroller, but managed to keep all three alive. Defeated the rest of the Patrollers and Daikon evolved.

Now I made it to Spurge City.

Obsidian is the most decent Platinum hack. Flawless makes a lot of shit changes, Bloody cranks the difficulty straight into unfun territory, and Enhanced isn't much harder than vanilla plat. If you want to keep doing Dray hacks there's Fire Red Omega and Rising Ruby/Sinking Sapphire.

Usually don't like doubleposting but the thread needs bumped. After grinding Omastar up 30 levels it immediately got outsped and hit with a fissure. Venomoth died to something Giovanni had, already forgot. Primeape jobbed hard to Lorelei. Parasect was actually pretty cool. It saved my ass against Lance with spore. Unfortunately, it got taken out by Cloyster. In a twist I never saw coming fucking Pikachu saved me from Cloyster. Good job Pikachu, and bye bye Gen 1.

Just reached the Rocket with a Raticate in Red Version - where I wiped out last time. The good(?) thing about Gen 1 nuzlockes being that I've basically got the same team as I had last time, except for Mach dying in his first battle this time around.

Going to try and do a cross-gen Nuzlocke here - after beating Red, I'm transferring my winning team to Silver (Virtual Console version), Breeding them all, before trading the eggs to a fresh Gold file. Possibly under the proviso of only using one or two at a time from my 'old' team. We'll see how it all pans out.

Got my 4th badge. Totally trolled Morty by depleting his Hypnosis and Dream Eater PP by constantly switching. Got very lucky in the bug-catching contest and immediately ran into Scyther. Strongly considering using both Steelix and Scizor on my team. Almost got killed by a Hiker with explosives (Geodude and Graveler). Now beefing up the levels of my team a bit. Or you could get Pidove (which isn't horrible but still), Patrat, and Purrloin like I pretty much always do. Occasionally I get Lillipup but it almost always has a shit nature and the wrong ability.

Where would you guys put Sun/Moon on the difficulty list?

Also, I've been nuzlocking through GSC and it's ranking seems too high on the list.

SuMo is surprisingly hard. Some of the totems are pretty tough if you don't have exactly what you need to Z-Move one shot it.

And Z-Moves are tough to play around ... sometimes they just Z-move OHKO you with little counterplay.

There is a game crashing bug if you try to buy anything from the guy selling Leftovers and suff in the Mart in Spurge City, maybe because I didn't have any tokens to spend.

Defeated Rinji, the Heath Village's Gym Leader and got the Nature Badge.

I'm loving my team in this run than my other team. Everyone is putting in the work. Hopefully I can find a Dawn Stone soon so I can evolve Maiden here in to a Froslass.
