i'm really not a genwunner, i've been following and enjoying Pokemon for quite a while now.

but please, can we agree that these cover legendaries are way over the top?

Shit, they are alien infused celestial lion and bat. Wtf m8.

Gen 3 was the beginning of the "excessive" legendary designs, and Latios and Latias are not "clear" designs. While Necrozma's new forms are more complex, I think it's a bit disingenuous to use Lati@s as a counterpoint.

Have you ever seen B/W-Kyurem? THOSE are overdesigned. It looks like both of them were taped together forcefully, like it was never supposed to happen, even though they were actually the same Pokémon originally. Also, they're supposed to be a "natural", "earthly" Pokémon, but they don't look like it, but seem extremely artificial.

The new Necrozmas just look like the original mons with an armor. The animation even gave me the impression that the Necrozma part moves independently from the rest of the body, what actually makes it even more interesting.

Kyurem's fusions are not supposed to look natural at all, but exactly the opposite. They're imbalanced, forced fusions that lack the elements of the remaining dragon to truly complete it.

Their fusion is perfect. Well, almost, perfect would be the 3 members fused together to make the original dragon. Nonetheless, B&W Kyurem has Kyurem's base with elements of Reshiram/Zekrom on the right places. They go well together considering all three are dragons too. Necrozma fused with Solgaleo and Lunala is looks way more artificial and forced and you said, cause they look nothing alike.

I'd argue that both look 'forced' in different ways, and that's because both literally are. Necrozma -forces- itself onto a body, while Kyurem is -forced- to undergo a mere two-way fusion that was never meant to be.

That doesn't make any of them bad, though. I love all four designs. My only problem is that Dawn Wings Necrozma could've had its arms placed just a bit higher.

The real answer, which I didn't see mentioned in this thread, is that Solgaleo and Lunala are Ultra Beasts, so their designs are more unorthodox.

Idk about you, but I really like Mechalion and Mechabat, neat designs imo and they are probably changeable like certain other legendaries.

If people dread these designs, but enjoy their vanilla forms then there is nothing lost to them since they aren't forced to use/keep them. Unlike folks who like Zygarde's 100% form, they can't even legitimately keep that form permanent and have to give in to its lame gimmick

Yes, i can agree that they weren't natural fusions, but were forced by an outsider... but how is it that 1/3 of a Pokémon looks "normal" (Reshiram and Zekrom look like perfectly fine Pokémon of their own), and 2/3 of it looks "imbalanced"?

If anything, since the 2/3 version is closer to the original, it should look more stable and complete than the 1/3 version, not the opposite.

In other words: it looks like GF designed Reshiram, Zekrom and Kyurem as separate, independent Pokémons, and then just taped them together, when it should look like they were a single Pokémon that was separated, which is the actual lore.

Overdesigning isn't necessarily bad, but they way it was done, it felt so.

[AS FAR AS WE KNOW], Necrozma forms have more reason to look "out of place", since it's literally one Pokémon absorbing/possessing another, and both are unrelated. They look like the old model with an other-wordly parasite attached to it because that's EXACTLY what they are.
On the other hand, the Gen V fusions shouldn't look like that, but they do.

Xerneas is a fucking awesome design. I don't think I have every actually seen any hate for Xerneas so saying it was widely hated sounds like bullshit. Kyurem is the actual body of the dragon that was stripped of its features and power, which is why it has hardly any features left to its body. Kyurem *is* the dragon, but Reshiram and Zekrom weren't entities of their own before the split. They were pure, opposing aspects of Kyurem given physical form.

The reason why Kyurem's current fusions don't look stable is because they aren't: it only has one half of its old strength and body with no counterbalance, which is reflected in its asymmetry (which I think is also part of why most people consider it overdesigned). The arm/wing that was frozen on one fusion is thawed on the other. You could say that they're, in a literal sense, "half-baked". If it was in its true form, it most likely wouldn't have any ice on it and look smoother and more symmetrical, and probably much more appealing to the eye. Pic is a fanartist's feasible example, IMHO.

Most legendaries are supposed to look extravagant and majestic. Imagine going to meet a king and finding out he looks like some boring, basic-ass, typical basement dweller. Would you take him seriously? Not to mention Sun and Moon are hinted to be UBs, so their designs might seem a little outlandish. Despite that they're pretty tame.

This is the best reasoning I can think of for Legendary designs. They're unusual Pokémon with unusual abilities, and some of them are outright deities. Even Mewtwo back in the day was very much unlike any other Pokémon in Gen 1, and it had its reasons for that.

This is what I was trying to say earlier. Kyurem's assymetrical nature is probably what rubs people off, but it is supposed to look like that because we didn't get the complete fusion of all 3 members. Other than that, the fused Dragons look perfect to me.

Even though i'd still prefer if B/W Kyurem was a bit smoother, i have to say that's actually a quite decent explanation for their design.

That original dragon fanart does look smoother than B/W Kyurem, but it still looks more like a fusion than an original being, but i guess that's inevitable, given the order in which they were released.

i think the words you're looking for are "silly" and "terribly forced"
they don't look like designs that were properly planned and more like a half assed attempt at making mascots so they can focus on other shit(kinda like lycanroc dusk)
people like to complain about the kyurem forms but at least those look like proper fusions.
