Dawn had the best team out of the main anime girls desu (except for Togekiss who came out of nowhere and did absolutely nothing)

Misty had a lot of pokemon but she almost never used them for anything
May's team only got interesting after she left the show
Iris' team became irrelevant once she got Dragonite because of BW's shoddy writing
Serena's team was simply pathetic
And the SM sluts would be lucky to even reach Serena's level because they have to share screentime

I liked May's team for most of Hoenn:

Combusken, Beautifly, Skitty, Bulbasaur and Munchlax.

Only problem is when Battle Frontier started she left 3 pokemon behind and then got Squirtle, and then later on Eevee which barely did anything because the writers were saving it for Glaceon promotion in the next arc.

Only Lillie is a "main" girl; she gets about the same amount of attention as previous main girls, Mallow and Lana are supporting characters.

Iris only had 4 pokemon as a main character, Serena only 3, and the SM girls will probably only have 2 each by the time the saga ends.

Misty had way too many pokemon, to the point where half of them barely did anything. May and Dawn had 7 pokemon each because they obviously had to do the most amount of battling and focus due to the Contests. Since the girls after don't have any battling goals, they don't need full teams.

I think the only difference is Dawn was just the last female companion they treated as a major character.

Iris tried to be Misty 2.0 but worse, and with Serena largely being used for shipping and the SM girls just being a harem and slice of life...there's not much to say.

Had they used Hilda or any other main girl in the anime, Dawn probably wouldn't have continued to stand out as much years after she left.

It's rather obvious the writers didn't intend May to get Blaziken till she was going to leave the cast. It would have made her too overpowered during the saga.

The girls always get stronger after they leave the show. Same reason Misty got Gyarados and now a Mega Gyarados, when she would have never gotten a strong pokemon like that while she was a main character.

Lillie is probably the most dull main girl we've had yet. The difference is since she's in a group of 3 it doesn't matter much, if Lillie was the only main girl in SM and Mallow/Lana weren't part of the main cast, I'd be bored out of my mind.

Iris Dragonite is another good example. Would much rather she'd raised her dragons from scratch or mid, instead of suddenly adding a powerhouse to her team. Even if it was a nice depiction against the nice Dragonite stereotype, it tipped her balance off to definitive dislike for me.

I'm fairly certain they intended for Axew to evolve at one point, but then Axew ended up becoming one of Gen 5's mascot Pokemon, so they couldn't evolve it, and gave her Dragonite in an attempt to make up for Axew not evolving.

Trainers in the anime can't use more than 6 poke balls containing pokemon at the same time, but there's nothing stopping them from simply leaving their pokemon somewhere else, you know. May leaves them at home just like Ash leaves his at Oak's lab.

Well then what do you mean? May IS traveling by herself now. So how is she not look independent or well rounded enough? Even after Hoenn May traveled by herself from Petalburg to Pallet Town without anyone else. Remember Max went with Birch there.

I don't get why you don't see May as indepedendent. This isn't the first 30-40 eps of Hoenn where May was a rookie trainer and relied on Ash to help her before she became a better trainer.

I asked why you (or anyone else), thought May didn't seem that way. Even ignoring the fact that she's traveling on her own now, by the time we got to late Hoenn/Battle Frontier when she was still on the cats, she was self sufficient and looked independent enough. It's almost like the person was implying May was still the same as she was in early Hoenn where she didn't know much about pokemon and just had a weak Torchic and Wurmple. etc.
