>>33599438Let's be real here, when the game itself threw psychic types at you, they weren't really that difficult to handle; the Abra line has garbage defense and HP, so something fast enough with a physical attack would tear through it. The Slowpoke line was, well, slow (30 base speed), so if you hit it fairly hard with a special attack before it sets up Amnesia, it wouldn't be that hard to finish it off. Exeggcute line didn't even learn psychic type moves by level up, so forget them even making use of it when the NPC's use them. Jynx is really fucking rare and has absolute garbage defensive bulk and jobbed easily to rock type attacks; Mr. Mime was pretty much the same, but with more defense, but less HP, and you had to hit it with a neutral hit. Drowzee or Hypno were also a rare sight to see among NPC's, and don't even show up in Sabrina's gym at all. Starmie shows up once for Misty and then fucks off, except for like one trainer on route 21 that has one. Mewtwo was definitely ridiculous to try to deal with, but you would expect that from a postgame legendary.
tl;dr psychic being broken affected competitive more than in the game itself
And then, gen II psychics were nerfed by special split, so any of them that weren't only psychic and had weaknesses to special types were easier to deal with than in gen I.
