They were from a QoL perspective, but they completely lacked soul. ORAS inherited all the good features from XY (except character customisation, which was rudimentary anyway) while having an engaging story and characters.

Z would've been amazing. The first half of XY was really good, ignoring the crappy story (which you actually can ignore fairly easily, compared to how heavy handed Sun/Moon were with their story). Better character customization, huge regional pokedex, and honestly, better graphics than Sun/Moon. It gets rushed by badge 4 and starts to feel a little unfinished, but I was honestly really looking forward to Z.

No doubt a Z that fixed the horrible characters, short and boring story and lack of post-game content would have made it the next Pt/HGSS though. What a waste of potential.

XY's flaws do get overstated, people cry about "muh post-game" when really most of the games that do have post-game just have a handful of extra routes that you can access. The only game with substantial post-game is GSC/HGSS and the main game in those was pretty barebones anyway.

Having said that, the pacing really takes a nosedive after the third gym and there was a ton of stuff that didn't really reach its full potential.

I wouldn't say ORAS had an "engaging story", but it is easy to remember every place where Team Aqua/Magma ambushed you. I can't say the same for Team Flare or Team Aether/Skull.

The fuckhuge dex was really important for me at least. Probably 50% of my living dex was caught and raised in Y, and it was the first game where I actually caught 'em all.

Despite its flaws, it'll always have a spot in my heart just because of that.
