In one trailer they were called Elio and Selene aka the two names for the greek gods of the sun and moon

Elio and Selene sounds way better than calling them "Sun" and "Moon". I don't know why it never got any traction.

Only gen 1 protagonist are still named after their games, Red and Green/Blue. "Gold" and "Crystal" got the names Ibiki and Kotone and the most used name for "Silver" is Kamon (even with non japaneses versions of the games), since then ALL protagonist have regular names. The kid is called You and the girl is Mizuki, people must just deal with it and forget the placeholder names
Hell people think the guy from XY is called Ex and the girl Wye because these were the japanese placeholder names? What about Black2 and White2?

They had a design were the original pair games was released, unlike Kotone/Lyra who wasn't around until Crystal, yet she's still the same female MC you can pick at the start, beats Giovanni's son everytime they fight and defeats Red at the end at Mt. Silver. Same character with a new design, no more. The only difference is that you can choose that character for being a different one (Elm's child) but that happen with Ibiki/Ethan as well

Because the manga came out and called them sun and moon. Also because this was the first game that didn't give you an actual default name nor did it give you the counterpart of the other character. Only one version exists, the boy or the girl.
