Why are the gen 7 mon so slow

The stat distributions for all the gen 7 pokemon are interesting.. most of the new pokemon are slow as fuck
Why is that?

I want them to solve the power creep through way better means, like raising BSTs for older pokemon or something

Because GF fucked up with the speed power creep in Gen 5. Dialing it back is impossible now, since they won't cut back on a Pokemon's BST to balance out their stats, so yes, the only solution to is to improve older mons.

It goes beyond just stats however. Movepools and abilities are another factor. I don't expect all Pokemon to viable (that's just stupid thinking), but there should be good variety to select from for diverse teams.

I think you already know, power creep ya.

I think raising BSTs for older pokemon is a really good idea personally. It's not like backwards compatibility across gens has ever been or even needs to be a thing.

To add to your point, it was also because in RBY, Pokemon had a lot of unused space that GSC could use (Like the happiness stat), without altering the game back in gen 1.

They do sometimes, there were a handful of mons in SM that got minor stat buffs. Pelipper had 430 BST in Gen 3-6 and now it has 440.

There is a theoretical graph for many games that shows the power level of things. In card games: the more costly the spell/creature, the more powerful it's effect should have. In pokemon: the better it's stats and move pool are, the better the mon.

Tyranitar is WAAAAY above the normal power level curve for everything it does, but it has checks and balances that prevent it from being on every team, like fighting types being so common.

Meanwhile a pokemon like Mega Camerupt, while very strong, are far too slow to do much and have too many weaknesses to use easily.

Because of the Speed Creep caused in Gen 6. But then they forgot to make make the Alolamons good outside of the legendaries, Mimikyu, Toxapex, and Alolawak so it amounted to basically nothing. Not to mention said one of said pokemon became the speed creep to end all speed creeps.

It's when new things are added that are stronger than old things, then the old things are buffed so they are as good as the new things or better, then more new things are added and they are even more powerful, so the old things get buffed again to match the new things and so on.
It's happened to every competitive game ever and is a never ending cycle.
Heck, in gen 7 there are now abilities that don't even get mold broken.

If they made an ability that basically instant casts Trick Room we'd see a decent shift in usefulness for slow pokemon. Sure you'd have to build a team around it but it would be a nice counter to pokemon who win just because they're fast.

It really wasn't until gen 5 that 100 speed became the norm. Heck, that applies to every stat. Rotom-w used to be a wall even though it has 50/107/107 defenses and good typing/ability, and will o wisp and low hp pain split

It's ok, not impressive. A long time ago it was but not anymore. Typing/ability and access to reliable recovery are more important.
Also low hp/high defenses are more bulky than high hp/low defense or middling hp and defense.

It still isn't considered slow.
You guys are just looking at the numbers themselves and not in regards to speed tiers.
101+ are considered fast.
0-99 are not nor have they ever been considered "fast".
Being above or below the 100 threshold is the most important part.
