They were. They showed expression without much movement and were super stylized. And if you really wanted to see your favorites animated there is the series and movies for that. It showed that despite the limits of the gameboy and DS Gamefreak knew how to make the Pokemon look good. The 3D models are low quality, expressionless, washed up and horribly animated.

There's a huge fucking difference between drawing a slightly deformed body to make the pokemon look alive and drawing a head three times the size of its body because it looks cute :3

The problem with the 3D models is hey don’t do shit. They stand in lame static positions that don’t have any character. The sprites has cool poses that made the game feel more alive.
