If Yellow is different enough, especially story-wise, people wouldn't mind buying it as well as Red or Blue.
Crystal is basically Gold/Silver with some improvements, but still basically the same game.
The few exclusives like Mareep are comparable to only getting Growlithe in Gold.

Are you retarded? Yellow only has Pikachu following you and being able to get all 3 starters as different. Crystal has a female protag, animated sprites, Eusine/Suicune sideplot, the Battle Tower and move tutor.

The story and characters in Yellow are significantly different from RB, for the most part, but it doesn't really add anything extra, it's just different. Up to personal preference. Meanwhile, if you want a Battle Tower, there's no reason not to buy Crystal.
Nip Blue was the true gen 1 "third version," not Yellow.

It's literally the exact same game, but with Pikachu following you. The only change is that a few Rocket encounters are Jessie and James instead of generic Rockets.

Sabrina, Koga, Erika, Lt. Surge, Giovanni, Blaine all have different Teams.
Jessie and James for anime "pandering".
Being able to get all 3 starters.
Meanwhile, the differences between Crystal and GS are very miniscule.
Everyone uses the same teams.
The only changes were Eusine's 2 appearences, only one being a battle.
You can get all 3 legendary beasts and both cover legendaries in all 3.
The biggest criticism Crystal got back in the day was that it wasn't different enough like Yellow was to RB.
Crystal's sales pretty bad back then for a reason.

I guess not significantly, but enough changes in sprites/characters to count as much when gen 1 basically had no plot. If that doesn't matter to you, just look at the gym leader movesets of the gen 1 and pick based off that, since those are pretty influenced by the anime.

There were a ton of changes in Crystal.

Because Pokémania died around that time, that's the only reason. Not because it wasn't "different enough." 3rd versions always sell less Crystal isn't even the lowest selling game.

Literally look at critic reviews.
People were upset that Crystal's changes weren't more obvious like Yellow's were.
Yellow was clearly meant to be anime-inspired.
Crystal tweaked some things to make the game much more enjoyable, but people back then weren't into the idea of buying a slightly upgraded game.
Crystal is a more polished Gold/Silver.
Yellow was an anime based game using Red/Blue as the base.
People are more enticed to buy Red and maybe Yellow, or feel like they have an option between Red/Blue orYellow.
Nobody in their right mind would buy the poor man's Crystal, unless they really really like Ampharos.
It's almost certain they're holding back on Crystal for extra sales, anyways.

I think one of the differences with Yellow is that you don't get to choose your starter from the beginning, which is a draw of R/B. Even though you get all 3, its not the same as choosing 1 then building your team around it from the start.
