more common than you think...
Many first gen digimon (digital pets) were based of kaiju.
Many of the prototype pokemon were originally kaiju/dinosaurs as well, thus they were sampling from the same source.

Listen dipshits, Gen 1 defined what a pokemon is and looks like by virtue of being the generation that introduces them. The entirety of Gen 1 are the most pokemon-looking pokemon because of that. Pokemon that resemble Gen 1 pokes (Gen 2 and the ironically the majority of Gen 5) can't look like digimon for the same reason. And even most pokemon that don't exactly follow the Gen 1 blueprint look nothing like digimon. In fact,t the only pokemon I would make that claim about is Pyukumuku.

Also no digimon looks like a pokemon. The design styles are too different.

God I would give anything for them to go back to the watercolors and lighter palette .

I've always associated digimon with messier linework, a shit ton of details , and using weapons . Blastoise uses canons but the rest of the design is low key enough. If it were a digimon it'd probably be covered in spikes and have a bandolier on

It's not the spikes themselves, it's when they make the design too busy. And of course you get the dumbfucks that don't know jack shit parroting that even when the spikes are perfectly in-line with the design.

As I said earlier in the thread, pokemon and digimon had the same inspiration source at first, kaiji. Thus, most of the pokemon who were designed first look similiar to Digimon as majority of the originals were all kaiju.

The thing is, most of those don't have spikes coming out of nowhere. Look at Garchomp and MegaZard X, they have spiny points at odd points on their bodies rather than simply the head. And for the most part, those designs you mentioned have protrusions rather than actual spikes.

Take Slowbro for example. The "spikes" are on the Shellder clamping down on its tail, not on random spots on its body. Lapras has a horn and bony plates on its shell. The nidos have pointy SPINES because it ties in with their lore and leaking poison (as well as Poison Point). Sandslash has spines and spikes as part of its lore (rolls up into a ball of spikes). Kingler has a bony crown (not spikes). Golduck does not have spikes, it has protrusions on its head.

Actually, most of the mons you listed don't have spikes. They have spines, quills, and pretty much decorative protrusions that go with the lore. They don't make the design too busy because they're not dumped in random places.

The difference between gen 1 pokemon such as Nidoking and >>33637578 this thing here is two things mainly. The watercolors and the Toriyama artstyle Pokemon went for. Although Digimon also had its own simplistic monsters, in general the idea behind Pokemon that everyone including kids from back in the day understood is Pokemon attempted to have more simplistic looking monsters since day one. I don't care about developers talking about hardware limitations of the past is why they did this. In fact I can even guarantee they weren't thinking about that as much back then if at all even. What happened is that since day one they wanted a more cute simple design philosophy for their monsters. Even the cool monsters have a cuteness to them like Dragonite and Charizard. The later being a fat cute looking dragon.

While other monster franchises such as Digimon, Monster Rancher (some of you are way too underaged to even know of this) and Yugioh all went for something different. Especially in the case of Yugioh which I always saw as wanting to aim for more of a teen audience with its cooler and edgier (yes children edgier is a word) monster designs. Digimon are also very all over the place with their designs. Although perhaps it works for Digimon idk.

So regardless of what anyone says remember this. Since day one Pokemon always went for a more childish, cute look for their monsters. The idea behind them was always to look as simple/clean and even cute as possible even when they had a meaner/cool looks such as Nidoking.

When I was just getting into middle school Yugioh was just becoming a thing and I remember quite well that most of my peers started to prefer Yugioh to Pokemon and saw it as the newer more cool monster franchise on the block. I never cared much for Yugioh and always preferred Pokemon but these are facts.
