how well does season 1 of the anime hold up nowadays? feel pretty nostalgic and want to relive some memories.

It doesn't. Season 1 was terribly boring and nuts. It only gets the nostalgia treat exactly because was the first, but it's terrible.

I recently watched the gym battle episodes and the league ones. If not for the nostalgia I don't think I could recommend it at all, although this applies to the whole series.

The soundtrack is the shit though and being able to see some of my favorite Pokemon animated in the pre-digital coloring era is pretty dope, too.

If Season 1 is Kanto only... It is pretty fucking bad. Many fillers, not too much character development for both Pokemon and humans, not too many battles. Terrible.

In terms of quality Kanto is even worse than Unova, and people hated Unova. Kanto doesn't get as much flake because of nostalgia but in truth at least Unova had more for its buck.

But Kanto was at least better than Johto, We can all agree on that.

I rewatched it recently after really enjoying the XY series. I didn't like it that much, the animation is pretty janky and the early incarnations of Ash/Misty/Brock are honestly kind of obnoxious. The writing in general is a lot more cynical and eager to make Ash look like an idiot. If anything it's really no wonder that so many people grew up to dislike him because the early seasons treat him like shit.

The first half is pretty good, but then you take a dive into filler hell. The team thought that every single pokemon deserved it's own episode for some reason, so Ash stops collecting badges and fucks around with random jabeeps in random made up cities. The series picks up again for a bit but lacks a strong climax as ash loses the pokemon league just so they could milk the series further.
I have fond memories of it and still watch it from time to time, but I can understand if someone can't get into it.

I don't think it holds up, but you could always just start watching it and find out for yourself whether you want to continue or drop it. Plus, even as a kid I never really liked it much.

I think it's the best to date. You can really tell they had no idea what the future was going to be like and just tried everything. Every season afterwards feels like the same story with different pokemon.

It's still just an average or subpar anime but it's still the best pokemon.
