Did anyone else not get disappointed with replaying these? I thought I was blinded by nostalgia, but they are truly patrician titles. I replayed G/S, HG/SS and even R/S/E and I loved every minute of it. Where as I can't get myself to replay any gen 6 title once. Even Gen 5 graphics are truly horrific to look at. To the point of unplayability desu lads

Old games like G/S and R/S/E are truly amazing and still playable. Comfy region, nice characters and amazing OST make every second of gameplay really enjoyable.

Haven't replayed Gen 4, 5, or 6 lately. Haven't played Gen 3 at all, outside of oras.

I'm loving replaying Silver. Gen 1 aged worse than 2, but it doesn't seem like Gen 2 aged at all.

I think I the only thing that keeps me from replaying the later generations is because I've played them recently. I think playing the old games is fun because it causes me to not really give a shit and just use all the pokemon I like.
Still fucking hate how the wild pokemon in kanto aren't brought up to your level though.

I had never played Red (my first was Yellow) and I absolutely could not get into playing it whatsoever. It was just...I don't know if it was boring, ugly to look at or what. I feel like I've been spoiled by newer gens and better QoL features. I think I got up to Sabrina in Red because all I wanted to do was try out the Mew glitch.

I've already gotten the Zephyr Badge on Silver though. I'm not having any trouble where it feels like its a slog and I don't care about it (although, having to go and swap out shit is annoying)

Today kids probably don't replay a game 5x and because of that many games are just "play from cut scene to cut scene" and then you have the multiplayer to make up for that where you basically spend 99% of your playing time and it's the same for pokemon now. They just put in a story, use cut scenes to tell it, guide you through a piss easy game, give you stuff you need (mega stones etc) and then its just breeding for multiplayer

The physical/special split happened in gen 4. Before that, every type was permanently tied to one of the two and moves like Fire Punch had to be special.

Not at all, I love these games. I played gold for the first time yesterday and found it to be really good. Colors look nice, same with textures, love being able to skip most tutorials, and I adore the fact that attacks affect the screen like water gun causing water droplets to go down on the status bar.

There are some other nice little touches in G/S/C, too. For example,

Sometimes pokemon will be sleeping to start the battle when you headbutt trees. If a Shuckle holds a Berry for a while, it will turn into Berry Juice, like the pokedex entry says. A point of contention; a few non-legendary rare wild pokemon will be able to flee during encounters.

I believe all of these features were absent in HG/SS and later games, which was unfortunate. I liked them all.

Literally the only thing that bothers me is the fact that the movepool is still so limited in gen 2. Voltorb doesn't even learn any electric moves for fuck's sake.

For that reason alone, I'd still recommend to someone who's never played gen 2 to just play the hack version Polished Crystal instead since it fixes every major and minor complaint that most people have about gen 2.

I was expecting to enjoy Silver solely for its nostalgic value, but I'm actually enjoying it for what it is all the way through.
When I first played it as a kid it was through the Dodrio Tower in Pokémon Stadium 2, so this is actually my first time playing on an actual handheld, and I'm surprised that not even the lack of Running Shoes is being a problem to me.

RBY and GSC are truly the best games in the franchise. The pinnacle of Pokemon. Not even the remakes can hold a candle to the originals. I've replayed them for years and years and I'm still blown away by how atmospheric they are. It's really sad that the underage and the barely legals can't experience this feeling.

Yeah. I played RBY right after SM and enjoyed RBY a lot more, and I'm similarly enjoying Silver more than I did SM. I think the new games bring plenty of QoL stuff that works for post-game stuff but as standalone games they're just not that good.

It has a nostalgic, laid-back, rural historical Japanese vibe courtesy of the part of Japan that it's based on. And by nostalgic vibe, I don't mean nostalgia attached to the game being old, I mean it was there from the start, that's the feeling they were aiming for with all of the old-world Japanese architecture and legends etc. It is relatively small, but in a cozy sort of way.

I had a few minor issues but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed replaying this game again. The only thing that stops me from replaying gen 2 often is its Pokemon selection, if you don't have any way to trade Pokemon then you're quite limited a number of Pokemon either require trading to evolve, require an item that is only obtainable in Kanto or only appear in the wild during post-game.

It probably doesn't help that Red and Blue are monochrome on a 3DS, even though they were Game Boy Color-enhanced games.

The lack of any sort of colour on the screen really makes them feel like a drag, but I still managed to power through Red in 2 days.

I remembered what I loved and hated about the series, but overall I'm still very pleased with them.

It's nice to know that the series hasn't really gotten easier so much that it's gotten less annoying in its difficulty. It makes the games feeling easier these days not as big of a deal because I know its the lack of dumb shit like every gym leader having a status to inflict on you or genuinely awful learnsets that made the older games as annoying as they were. It feels like Gen 2 aged very nicely. The problems are a lot less glaring than in Gen 1.

RBY are held together by sticks and tape, they barely work and have so many glitches it's ridiculous. A type literally doesn't fucking work. GSC are better, but I still feel like it's weighed down by a few things, mostly due to Johto being bland and small.

I agree with you on HGSS, but I severely miss physical/special split and the more developed learnsets of gen 4 when playing GS.
It's worth it for the massive nostalgia bomb, and they are definitely amazing games in their own right, but the remakes are just better.

And yes the older games were just better.

Technically they just enabled the SGB palette on the GBC for Yellow. The bigger question is why the fuck doesn't the 3DS support SGB palette/borders for SGB enabled games by default? No, but what is true: all females have a lower Attack IV (or DV), because of the way gender was calculated. If a species was 50/50 on gender, your pokemon would be female if the Attack DV was 0-7, and male would be 8-15. That was quickly scrapped and became its own separate value in gen 3.

Not true. Males had odd Attack DVs, females had even. It's basically the same way traits are in DP onward, a Mischievous Pokemon CAN have a higher Sp. Atk than any other mon, but being Mischievous doesn't necessarily mean it's got perfect.

I just started but I don't expect to be disappointed because my only memories of GSC are rushed play-throughs without saving because my onii-sama wouldn't let me save over his file. 3rd gen was my first real gen. Since I have a strong nostalgia from FRLG, RBY was immensely enjoyable. Its simplicity from the modern autistic mon games was refreshing. HGSS was meh so hopfully this can salvage his gen for me.
