i distinctly remember getting my balls stapled to the wall by Cynthia in Platinum, then again my team had a major electric weakness (Empoleon + 3 flying types: Scyther, Drifblim, Staraptor) and then i only had Giratina and something else I caught on victory road. i got wrecked by her togekiss or something. Very challenging, team had amazing synergy.

It's been a while since I've played HGSS, but goddamn I can't believe they didn't bother fixing the team composition. Half of the gym leaders don't have any Johto pokemon, and of the ones that do, only Clair is excused for using only one Johtomon. Why not give Falkner a Hoothoot? Bugsy a Spinarak or Ledyba? Whitney a Furret, Snubbull, or Aipom? Morty a Misdreavus? Chuck a Hitmontop or Heracross? Jasmine a Skarmory? Pryce a Sneasel?

honestly this is a pretty annoying set to go up against. I mean, you usually never carry taunt in regular playthroughs and it's not like you'd know it's moveset before fighting it. The obvious downside is after fighting it you'd realize 2 poison types or 2 steel types completely destroy it.

to be fair, gold and silver were meant to be the last games, since the third gen it became more of a thing to have a new region with all the new pokemon implemented, but second gen seemed to be more like an expansion of the first game, i mean fuck it was right next to kanto, which explains all the kantomons, but that being said, hiding all of the best second gen mons (ONE FUCKING NEW GHOST AND ITS HIDDEN AS FUCK) was a huge fuck around

to be fair I don't think they were ever talking about the level curve or the quality of opponents when you play since it's notoriously one of the worst. The real question is how did they go from making a ton of good choices in platinum only to make so many poor ones for HGSS. platinum came out before HGSS so you'd think they would have done better

I don't understand how quality of opponents isn't the most important quality for everyone.
How much can it be to battle these trainers?
I remember them just being there in HGSS.
GSC as a kid was something else because I had less knowledge of the game.

Actually, trainers can only tie custom movesets to one Pokemon. Every other mon gets their levelup set. The custom moveset is used on Blue's starter in the final battle, whereas everyone else gets their levelup moves. Funnily enough, Blue would've been more challenging if he didn't evolve his Growlithe because of that.

Again, the game is balanced around 16 gyms. Beating Lance the first time marks the halfway point of the game, therefore it makes perfect sense for the gyms to be weaker than average.

Platinum was shit by the way. Gardenia uses almost every single grass type available in Sinnoh, and her team has 3 Pokemon. The other 3 are Tropius, Tengela and Carnivine, 2 of which weren't even available in Diamond. Fuck that region.

It's not terribly hard to have a Grass-type by that point, indisputably the best type for fighting Water-types in-game, so you'd probably have a Water resistance anyway.
Totem Vikavolt is the real fuckup. 145 base Special Attack with a +1 boost backed up by Battery, and it doesn't get a single Special move to wreck your shit with. Imagine if they'd put Thunderbolt and Bug Buzz on it less of a stretch than Totem Mimikyu having Shadow Claw and Play Rough at level 33, since Mimikyu doesn't get Play Rough until 46 and Vikavolt learns T-bolt upon evolving and Bug Buzz at level 31

No, PWT teams don't count as postgame, ingame battles (rematches, HG/SS Kanto/other half of Unova in BW) are separate from battle facilities like the PWT, BF, Battle Tree, ect, because they don't level scale your Pokemon and can generally be completed with your ingame team, where as the latter would shitstomp you if you use sub-optimal mons.

Rating HG/SS' with postgame in mind is competely valid because nobody fucking stops playing after beating Lance the first time, that's another like 30+ hours of gameplay, where as if you don't do the BF in Platinum, you maybe have another 10.

i've done a bit of autistic number crunching and can definitely confirm they have evs, but they're stored separately from the trainers in the code and i don't think there's too much interesting in digging for them, so the exact values are unknown. most obvious example i have for proof of evs is totem lurantis, which isn't 2HKOd by dragon rage, which is impossible if it doesn't have evs (75 max hp).

Things about totem pokemon that could have been done better:

Gumshoos: -Gumshoos had super fang while while Yungoos had hyper fang, this should have been the other way around as it makes more sense for the support pokemon to have a support move like that (though since it was the first battle it may have been done to make it easier)

Wishiwashi: -The school form of Wishiwashi has soak despite the fact that it hurts it more than it helps it, meaning it gets rid of STAB but it also makes the player resist it's best and only attack.
-Regular Wishiwashi is one of it's partners and the only helpful thing it does is helping hand since it has 2 attacks and aqua ring, since it's so weak these are basically a waste (Though this might be done for balancing since Alomomola is arguably the best SOS for any of the totems)

Salazzle: -Not that bad, it does get weird moves and it's SOS partner gets scratch but they both support each other well with poison gas, venom drench, and venoshock. Though, this is more of a poison trial despite the fact that it looks like a fire trial.
-You get Waterium-Z before this trial, which makes it way easier

Lurantis: -Lurantis' moveset consists of 2 grass moves and a bug move, making fire types even better against it since it has a sunny day theme to the fight
-Castform can set the sun for lurantis to become even more powerful. However, it runs water gun for some odd reason. You could say this is for fire types, but water gun doesn't do anything from castform especially in the sun and honestly it helps fire types even more. (This is probably done to balance things since lurantis under sun, especially when the player has no fire types, is a monster)
-You get the firium-Z before this battle, making it even easier to one shot lurantis with a fire move.

-Charjabug has strong shot to lower the player's speed but also has thunder wave to do the same, while this could be for opposing electric types, as it has a good resistance to them.

Mimikyu: -Mimikyu gets move it shouldn't know yet, this isn't really a problem with the battle itself since it's done to make it harder, but it does make it confusing why some other totem battles didn't do the same.
-Mimikyu has astonish and shadow claw, another support move would have been better than a small chance to flinch

Kommo-o: -Kommo-o has a mental herb for seemingly no reason other than to stop you from taunting it's protect
-Hakamo-o's move set includes 2 set up moves being autonomize and work up but one of it's other moves is bide
-Right before this fight you are handed Fairium-Z which allows you to bypass even the protect Kommo-o has and hit it from a x4 super fairy move. Even it if protects, it gets hit super hard and usually ends up dying. To the game's credit kommo-o does get flash cannon and has a possible scizor partner but It still loses very easily to fairies.

I get the feeling a lot of things you mention were originally in place, but had to be changed up because the trials ended up being harder than they were intended (and they were added so late in production that they don't have time to worry about things like Charjabug's ability doing nothing for Vikavolt's special moves were taken away).

Johto is Kanto expanded, both are meant to be one

Logically Farfetch'd is native to Johto and Houndour is a Kanto-mon. Numbers 152-252 in dex are newly found rare Pokemon in Kanjohto/Indigo (that's why they are so rare)

Also Johto leaders completes Kanto in types, so it's logical they should use both Kanto and Johto Pokemon

Considering how slow it is, every Pokémon on your team should be able to hit it at least once or twice before fainting. If you had 4, that's 4~8 hits on a Pokémon with no way to recover itself, while you probably do.

All you really need to do to fix Johto is to tweak the teams and force the player to follow a specific order in kanto so it can actually have a proper level curve. I know a lot of people like being able to just go wherever but the non-linearity fucks the game up a bit for levels.

Platinum has great trainer battles but Sinnoh as a region kinda sucks to navigate and it's got a fucked up pokedex. All the D/P exclusives should be in it and it needs more fire types, especially with a fire E4 member. The region problem is a bit harder. Platinum fixed D/P's awful surf speed, but there's so many fucking HMs you need to keep on you to navigate.

You could probably fix all this in a romhack, but evey "difficulty" romhack I've tried just goes way overboard on it, and I don't know how well you can actually change maps in gen 4 yet.

And why not just add some of the pokemon that required the GBA slot to be in the dex? That'd help round it out a bit for types.
