Probably encountering and catching one of my favorite Pokemon. I can't think of anything else. Like I remember getting Aron in my Emerald run and I was hyped as fuck. But if I ever encounter a shiny that would definitely be number 1.

Boy this game is kinda kicking my ass. Never had so many deaths in a Johto run before. Hopefully this ragtag team can beat Claire.
I was hoping to save Gengar for one of the Gen 4 games but desperate times call for desperate measures. Gengar with the elemental punches has demolished everything in its path so far.

Finally getting around to posting an update.

Tubbz got got. Explosion from Koga's Weezing when he was on liek 30 hp got her. I can't remember if it was a crit, but its by far the saddest death I've experienced so far since starting this run.
After that, its been smooth sailing. Nearly lost DigBick to Blue's Alakazam after Giovanni's gym.
Making my way through to the E4, grinding to level 55, then will go through. Hopefully will start Yellow tonight

Made it to Torenia Town where the Gym Leader is being Dream-Eaten by a Gengar, so I had to stop the Gengar in order to save the Gym Leader.
Was actually pretty easy. Got the Midnight Badge

I went ahead and encountered Gastly, Electrike (yusss), and Lombre.

There is also this fun game in this town called Pashini that if you win, you get a Pokemon as a prize, but it costs 2000 to play. And it's a dice-rolling game so it's all luck. So far I played it 4 times, one time being 3 spaces away. I think I'm gonna try a few more times.

Should I take another whack at nuzlocking?
I tried doing one in White like a year and a half ago, but sorta dropped the nuzlocke stuff half-way thru. Losing the starter was a big morale hit, and after losing my main man, throh, I just played til' like the 8th gym normally and dropped it altogether.
Any tips for sticking to it?

Sorry for your loss.

When I recently did it Hala killed 2 immediately and I thought I was done for. Luckily Gyarados with dragon dance is a monster so the other 4 survived. In the end all that was needed was Gyara, Decidueye and Muk, Glalie never even fought.

Things went well up until Lance where I lost Stronk. Got him setting up against the gyarados, but the a crit hydro pump came in and took me out. RIP. After that, Amnesia Poliwrath Swept him.

Blue's alakazam took out Red. It was burned, confused, but Still got two psychics off. After though, Tore through.

Honestly, highlights of this run have been Lungs, Tubbz, HubbaBubba and DigBick. They have put in so much work through this run, and I will be sad to retire them.

Time to start Yellow.

Does anyone else feel like USUM may very well be the holy grail of nuzlockes? Between its huge 400+ variety of pokemon and the surprising difficulty of SM which was a blast to blind nuzlocke, I'm optimistic about this game.

I'd save Bulbasaur for later personally. Oddish isn't bad either, but you can find it in a lot of games, so you may want to save it for later in case of need? Maybe hold out for a Bellsprout if you want a grass type because they don't appear in that many later games.

I kind of realized the biggest challenge outside the marathon aspect of it is the Retire Rule. Since your options going into FRLG might be pretty fucking slim. Meaning you have to put some actual thought into who you finish the game with.

For example you beat the League in Red with a Vaporeon. You have now locked out every Eeveelution for every game in the series.

I generally allow branching evolutions within a duplicates clause. For example, I'm allowed to catch 2 Glooms, once for a Vileplume, once for a Bellosome. Same goes for any other branches.

Here is an update. This is post St. Anne, grinding for the electric gym but with no ground types :(

In Red++ there is a Wonder Trade machine where you trade in a mon for a random one based on levels. I figured that I'm allowed to do this since it is a part of the hack and why not use it. Am wodering if I should do a rule where for each gym leader I'm allowed to trade in a caught poke for a random one. Or should I only do it once? Could provide an opportunity to get some interesting pokes since I'm not using the dupes clause.

It all depends on how they're distributed. SM was pretty good with it's 300 dex but the dex itself wasn't as well distributed as say XY's or BW2's. SM's started to go toward really predictable encounters later on, like how you're basically going to get Pelipper and Gumshoos sooner or later, and then almost all of the interesting stuff is in a single location. You're basically going to get Mudbray as well.

God damn Vast Poni Canyon always giving me Machoke and not Jangmo-o or Murkrow.

Started a randomized run in Heart Gold. Pokes have changed abilities, also changed TMs and field items. Starters: Riolu, Regirock, Torkoal. Took everyone's favourite shillmon because I actually never had this one in my team. I'll try to keep it that way but knowing my luck I'll end up with Wailord or Drapion sooner or latter.

Didn't feel like thinking up a good name theme so I'm going with phonetic alphabet this time. Naturally, this one is Alpha. Ended up with Shed Skin, so not half bad. Lonely nature. Could have been better but at least buffs the right stat.

I can only use a type once.

So I can't use both Bunnelby and Snorlax in my team at the same time, since they're both normal types. I can still catch every first encounter, the rule only affects my mons after capture

Wailmer, Azumarill, and maybe Sandslash are your best bets for Tate and Liza. Maybe Shuppet and Lunatone too. Combusken won't be very useful for either remaining gym but does well in the Elite 4. Oddish and Electrode will really help against Wallace, so I'd pick 6 of those.

I'd recommend a Gyarados and the Tentacruel, both have good defenses, especially special defense. Gyarados is an all around great poke as long as it doesn't get electrified and Tentacruel is useful sp def wall, especially against Wallace.

Okay /nuzgen/ riddle me this:

Playing through a standard Emerald nuzlocke and I get to the second route and find a lvl 3 Poochyena. Well, on the route prior I got exactly the same thing, lvl 3 Poochyena.

Should I enact species clause or no? Some guys in this thread were saying it made things easier, and I don't wanna be no bitch, but a part of me is rubbed the wrong way by the thought of getting nothing but a bunch of shitmons throughout the run. Idk I'm on the fence. Help me out here.

went for misty with a little apprehension, considering it was pretty much completely on the shoulders of an under-leveled pikachu since all of mankey's damaging moves are fighting type. scratch doesn't deal damage for some reason. little bit of luck saw us through and i walked away with six more fucking tms. kind of disappointed i found a list of them because trying to find out what all of them were might have been fun.

Its over. Lorelei, Bruno and Agatha went down easy.

Lance's Gyarados got Pikachu with a Hyper Beam. His Dragonite got Orbit with a Hyperbeam too. I loved that big wad of gum too. Grew really attached to it.

Blue was tough. I had 4 pokemon and a strong weakness to Psychic. Victor got got by the Alakazam, then Tarley picked up the pieces. Cloyster survived a petal dance too, so he took out Tarley. Which left me down to 2 Pokemon. But he only had 2 left as well, both of which weak to Ground. So Chubbz saved the day.

I have a new found respect for the Nido's now, after these games.

Its a shame Gen 1 sucks.

I'll start Gold in a few days. For now, I'm taking a small break.

Well, Brock went down without too much of a fight. Had some scares with bide, since I learned after the fact that in gen 1 it ignores accuracy checks. Everyone survived though. Route 3 and Mt. Moon were pretty uneventful outside of Cinnabar evolving right before the Raticate fight which went very well because ember burnt it on the first hit. With dupes clause I was guaranteed a Sandshrew on route 4, but it was my first encounter anyway, so that felt nice too. Going to take on Blue tomorrow. and cross my fingers for a Bellsprout on either route 24 or 25.If not, I'll leave Misty for after Vermillion and hope again for a Bellsprout on route 5 or 6.

Okay, this is my team pre-Roxanne. Standard nuzlocke rules, plus no items in battle, battle style set, and I can't train higher than the next leader's highest level pokemon. Also, no dupes clause which is why I don't have a full team yet (3 fucking Poochyenas in the box fml).

Trained everybody to 15 because Roxanne's Nosepass scares the shit out of me. Wish me luck...

Everything went alright. Buggo rekt both geodudes with absorb. Then I had a tense little moment when Nincada got blocked into Nosepass, but I spammed the hell out of sand attack and harden and luckily took it out before running out of pp with attacking moves.

Now Brawly time. I did barely any grinding for this one, which could fuck me over (hopefully not). I did catch a Tentacool in Dewford (especially cool because I was fully expecting a Magikarp) and caught him up to the rest, which now gives me a full team.

Pretty fun so far, at least concerning emerald. It prevents stupid amounts of grinding to brute force the game, which triggers the fuck out of me when I see someone do it in a nuzlocke. Also, I've already noticed the added difficulty in not being able to evolve things in the early game. Its what made roxanne such a nail-biter since no double kick Combusken, and would have prevented me from getting a gyarados before brawly had I got a magikarp.

Anyway onward toward the third badge!

So I figured I'd give an update and show off the team before going into the rival fight on route 110, since it can potentially be a run-ender if shit totally falls apart.

Nincada evolved and I ditched Ninjask for Shedinja. Figured it be pretty lulzy to mess around with in a nuzlocke even though it can (and probably will) easily die at any random point. Gave it a pecha berry just to be safe. Also, trained everyone up to 20 except for Mightyena, since its basically evolved poochyena, and fuck poochyena for real fuck it with an iron rod, stupid little shit.

Alright. So I beat Blue with no casualties and caught a bunch of new team members. I went down to clear out route 11 and pick up Beryl before fighting Misty just to be safe with exp. I'm thinking of getting Topaz twineedle at 20 before I do the fight just to be safe. I'm not stepping foot into Diglett's cave for fear of the random high 20s Dugtrios and because I already have a ground type. I also have everything in the grass on route 6, so I'm waiting for the good/super rod to pick something up there. Speaking of rods, what are people's opinions about fishing in the Cerulean gym for a catch for the entire city because otherwise it's the ingame trade or the short section of surfable water for the only encounters? I'm leaning towards yes, it's okay since there's nothing else really there, and if anything I'm handicapping myself without Jynx.

Well fuck. Got all the way through the SS Anne and on the last non-rival trainer, Topaz gets hit by a crit water gun and dies. First casualty of the run. I was actually kind of excited to use a Beedrill, but oh well. A slew of new evolutions in Surge's gym should make things a piece of cake.

Fun fact: In gen 1, there's always a good chance that no matter where the first switch is, the second switch will be in the top left can.

Not sure about the Kingler, though. Attack is great, but he has so little HP he'll probably just get one shotted.

It wasn't even guaranteed either, I could have easily got an Oddish as I didn't get one until the Safari Zone. I did miss out on Electrike though, as always. Oh well, lategame I got Lanturn which was pretty good. Lanturn would be one of the best Pokemon in Hoenn if it weren't so late.

A new adventure awaits! Time to finally start Gen2, and with that, Gold, probably the holder of most hours I've put into a game, but also one I haven't touched in like 12 years, so lets see how this goes. Update! Flawless Plat is fucking hard. Running low on 'mons and the last three routes were dogshit - Bellsprout, duskull killed itself, and crit OHKO a Tangela with Mega Drain. Current plan is to take Eevee to Espeon for Fighting gym to finish out the team.

Between Super Rod and the next two routes I think I have a shot at 3 more Mons before the next gym... hope I get something not terrible.

Even levels. They have strong movesets but the biggest problem was it being a doubles battle where opponets have high type diversity. If you look at my Mons you can see I lack a lot of coverage.

I have just ran through this game. As fast as its going, I'm having so much fun. This team I have is so much fun, and I'm really enjoying Aipom, surprisingly. Took me by surprise with the 7th gym being lower levelled than 6th gym, but I checked before hand, so I was okay for levels.

About to dismantle the Coup of Team Rocket on Goldenrod City.

It's because they had a branching path and you could either go left, to the fighting gym and jasmine, or right to the lake of rage stuff. So whichever path you take, you're going to be over leveled for the other one.
Also the kanto gym levels are fucked and it's basically just a big boss rush.

I have no idea how I managed to raise a Deerling to evolve without fainting, because it's been absolutely pathetic. I desperately want to replace it but everything I've gotten that is an option has had bad luck and fainted almost immediately so I think I'm stuck with it.

How's the Glazed E4? Made a comeback from a prior wipe and now I'm about to tackle them with Empoleon, Froslass, Floatzel, Metagross and Crobat at level ~50, plus a Kirlia that will soon be a Gardevoir. I'm thinking about getting Meteor Mash on Metagross, because not doing so cost me the last run, and going right in.

I thought Piplup would be the weaker starter, what with the early gym types, but I forgot Prinplup wasn't Steel yet so the ground dude was no problem. It also turns out that Empoleon naturally learns Swords Dance, which trivializes fights like you wouldn't believe. Still had a rough early game though, lost Arbok after missing against a Gabite (fuck Sand Veil and everything it stands for), Haunter to Pursuit and Arcanine to a critical High Jump Kick.

Empoleon himself almost went down to a critical Dynamicpunch too, while Floatzel tanked so many crits at 10-15 HP that I'm convinced she'll survive the whole run. It's been fun so far, looking forward to seeing what Johto brings.

Since the thread is slow, might as well say that the E4 run has been a complete success. Toxic Crobat and Swords Dance Empoleon were both amazing, and the champion didn't even stand a chance after Metagross got to +3 attack with Meteor Mash.

Johto is a bit scary, though. Didn't expect Salamance and Gyarados on Falkner, thankfully they both decided that Dragon Dancing five times in a row while taking Toxic and confusion damage is the reasonable thing to do. Would've led with Froslass if I had known, but hard switching her into Salamence is a deathwish so Crobat had to save the day.

At least Bugsy should have no surprises, although I'm expecting Drapion or Shedinja in addition to the obvious Heracross and Scizor.

Speaking of which, been thinking of switching Kadabra for Amaura and Butterfree for Combee (Vespiquen after one hour of grinding). Butterfree has saved my ass with his Compound eyes though.

So, I've been the league, so I now I need to take on Kanto.
Haakon (The Aipom) got beat by Will's Slowbro. For whatever reason, I thought Shadow Ball would take it out, but I was wrong, so a Psychic got him. I'm really upset, because Haakon is a fantastic pokemon. I really wanted him to survive.

Teaching Alakazam Ice Punch really made short work of Lance too. All three of his Dragonites when down immediately.

All in all, I really like this team, and I want them all to sruvive.

Who do I put in to fill the spot? I don't want to use Gyarados until Phys/spec split
