I chose Litten as my Sun/Moon starter. Who should I choose as USUM starter? Considered what new content will be added (100+ additional mons).

I picked Litten cause its Dark Type but not that Tyranitar line is in USUM, Litten dark/fire combo is totally useless.

Rowlet because I intended to go in blind but a friend spoiled me he turned into ghost, which sounded cool.
But he didn't really evoke a ghost in any real way by the end so I boxed him.

Wrong again, you meant movepool. A moveset is something specific to a character or Pokémon, movepool is common to the species. You love its movepool, not moveset. Unless you mean you love one speicific Popplio's moveset, then you can say "I love his moveset".

Color me surprise.
"Movepool" is a list of moves a Pokemon can learn, while a moveset is the 4 selected moves on one specific Pokemon. Saying that you love Popplio's moveset when referring to its complete list of learnable moves is wrong. It would only be correct only when referring to specific Popplio, like Lana's Popplio, for example.
What are you going to say, that 80% of Popplio have scald so "moveset" is the correct term anyway?

Primarina is probably the best starter from a mechanical/in-game battle perspective.

I think Decidueye is far and away the best one personally but that might not be your thing.

Box it and use a starter from another gen you've never tried. I went through Sun twice, once with rowlet and once with litten and both were pretty meh in my opinion. Maybe mine just had shit IVs/natures but I don't reset for good ones anyway.
