GS drives home how desperately Typhlosion needs a special coverage move to function, why do they keep giving him physical garbage he can never use?

Thunderpunch is special in gen 2 and in modern games he tends to run two fire moves, focus blast, and HP.

Thunderpunch was indeed special in Gen 2, and when that was the case Typhlosion was a borderline OU sweeper. Then the split happened, and all of a sudden it's barely skimming RU because regardless of how powerful Eruption is it can't make up for the fact that a single bulky mon with a bad type can cripple it.

Well, Typhlosion is based on badgers, I find odd why it gamefreak didn't decide to give it more special coverage... Energy ball would be great to have.

Probably because most types that get Earth Power are actually Ground. The ones that aren't Ground who learn it aren't even related to volcanoes barring Slugma.

I was ignoring it because it's a legendary and they barely follow learnset rules to begin with but sure. We have the Slugma line and Heatran, the only non-grounds to both learn Earth Power and be tangentially related to volcanoes. Whoopee.
