everyone has their own way of immersion. naming my pokemon just doesn't feel right to me, while most of the npc trainers of the game not naming their pokemon either seals the deal.

Carry over habit from RBY era. When there were only like, 6 sprites in the party screen, little 7-year-old me couldn't remember which 'mon was which if I named them. Even though every 'mon now has a unique sprite, I still don't name them.

As a kid watching the anime, I grew up believing that Pokémon said their own names to communicate. So it felt stupid if I were to name my Gengar "Jeffry" or something and it said "Gengar" all the time.

As I grew up, I learned that Pokémon would probably just growl and such like in the Generations shorts but now I'm just in the habit of not naming them

Because no-one else in the game names their Pokemon. Even Red, a former protagonist, doesn't name his Pokemon. Naming your Pokemon is uncanonical.

All the good ones (i.e. gym leaders, elite four, etc.) don't have one. The only people who name them are the NPCs that never battle anyone (probably because they're too shit at battling).

I just assumed most in-game trainers face nicknames. You just only see the species name because you're not psychic, so how could you know?
