As someone from a place where that franchise was never popular, how did YGO become such a hit elsewhere? The card artworks look absolutely atrocious and the rules seem too convoluted for a kid to grasp. Was it purely because of the anime?

The first US anime season the card games rules seems to be "make it up as a you go!"
but the 2nd season adapts the rules more closely to the real ones. The rules certainly are dauntingly confusing at times. It started more simply.

Yugioh wasn't always as confusing as it is today. It has been power creeped bullshit where you use half of your deck in a single chain in your first turn and win the game using a sequence of cards that is basically incomprehensible for a while now, but back when it started it was very simple.

My friends and I just loved monsters and card collecting (except my parents didn't let me get cards, made me feel bad for getting them, and my school banned them and I was a huge moralfag so I never had a single match in my life)

Here, Yu-Gi-Oh! got insanely popular because the anime was a hit. Until GX happened and everyone lost interest to both the anime and the TCG.

So the anime played a big part of the popularity.

If you didn't play by the summon rules and sacrificing cards (or if you dumbed it down a bit) it was a lot easier than the energies and benches and evolution in Pokemon. At least from a first glance especially as a kid.

Also the card game isn't as complicated as you'd think, the only real convolutions are deck builds and both the good and bad that implies.

The anime goes by different rules than the actual TCG.

atleast where I was from from the age of 10 and forward pokemon was for nerds and yugioh for the "cool kids"

Being 18 right now it seems odd being embarassed to talk about Pokemon as a child while seeing a lot of now adults play it (mainly because of GO)
