Yes, Escavalier was truly the pinnacle of Bug design.
Not counting, Vespiquen, Butterfree or Venomoth.
Volcarona has a shit color palette, and even worse wings. Hydreigon 2.0.

Well obviously he's modeled after Volcarona.
As for the rest, perhaps they convey a laid back attitude? Unlike most other champions, it doesn't seem like he tried to make his team look majestic or intimidating. A team of humble bromons.
Keep in mind that Alder was originally supposed to have a "Christ-like" image.

Bug Pokemon since he has 3 of them in his team. Luckily, he doesn't go full retard with only the type he specializes in.

On a side note:
For some unknown reason people have troubles understanding Alder but Steven is obvious for them. Steven STONE has equal amount of steel and rock types as well as fondness for rare rocks. But nah, he's a steel type specialist because Metagross.

He uses Pokemon nobody really gives a shit about aside from Volcarona. Everyone hates the ice cream pokemon. Druddigon is the worst Dragon in Gen 5, Bouffalant is a forgettable afro Tauros clone, and Accelgor/Escavalier have such obscure evolution methods, most people probably didn't even fucking bother with them. His whole team is full of random assholes plus Volcarona. Alder uses whatever the fuck he likes, regardless if it's shit or not.

I loved what they did with Kukui's team

5/6 of his Pokemon are all Melemele native, since he spends most of his time there, and the starter as a refrence to role as professor

The last one, A-Nintales, is because he lost against Lance, so he picked a mon that is 4x good against Dragon, and since he hung around Mt. Lanakila a lot since he was building his league
