DPP had a ton of new lore with a ton of legendaries and mythicals, with the statues of the dragons, the ruins at Mt Coronet, the folktales, the "Foreign Building" eerily similar to a church, the red chain from the lake guardians, the Azure Flute (which exists despite being unreleased), the Distortion World and the Hall of Origin, which took lore to a new dimension by more concretely integrating it with history. No longer was it "It's written somewhere that a legend made something happen once, oh here's the legend itself, sure looks impressive huh?" You can actually go to these rumored places once believed to be pure myths.
HGSS followed these trends. In addition to pre-established lore, Lugia and Ho-oh were now involved in the plot where you are their "chosen one." The ruins of Alph have a greater purpose, bring Arceus to them and you will be warped to a strange location with mystical powers, implied to be tied to creation. The titans of Hoenn myth have shrines dedicated to them, which connected the world of Pokemon together in a way it hadn't been since. Gen 4 really outdid itself in this area.
BW are probably the only games where you are explicitly the hero of the story, moreso than in Crystal and HGSS. It again brought a lot of lore tied with history in the Relic Castle, Dragonspiral Tower, Opelucid City and Undella Bay. There were a lot more multiple choice dialogue options than there were previously, and apart from Looker it started the trend of "story characters" where rather than simply fulfilling the role of a trainer class like gym leader or evil team leader, characters like N were given more nuanced backstories and goals, especially as N was also a "hero" in the story.
