So something like this, if my goal were to breed a Shiny Cyndaquil:
Step 1: Red Gyarados + normal Ekans (F) = shiny Ekans (F)
Step 2: shiny Ekans (F) + normal Ekans (M) = shiny Ekans (M)
Step 3: shiny Ekans (M) + normal Cyndaquil (F) = shiny Cyndaquil (F)
That last bit is where it gets considerably more tricky, I'm guessing, since female starters are more rare than males, making the shiny a lot harder to get.
But this is basically it, correct? Can anyone confirm this?
