What are your actually issues with this game? I'm thinking back on it and I had a genuinely good time with it, but it gets so much shit. Is that just /vp/ shitposters enraged with 3d games just because they're 3d, or am I missing something?

Being RS remakes instead of Emerald remakes, plus adding few new things and removing a lot of things from the originals like the Anon above me said. And don't give me any of that bullshit, we all know HGSS are really Crystal remakes and they did a damn good job of it. With ORAS I was constantly wondering why I wasn't playing Emerald all the time instead. That's how uninspired they were.

Besides the emerald autists, I think most people found them boring because the originals established the formula that has been followed ever since - it was exciting the first time around, but by ORAS the "evil team captures legendary to attempt to do evil thing" plot had been done again in Emerald, DP, Platinum, BW, B2W2 and XY.

It's a faithful remake - and that's the problem.
Hoenn's regional Pokedex of 200 is tiny following B2W2's 300 and XY's 450.
Mechanics had changed - particularly with regards to experience and megas, but the game had not been adapted to match it.

Emerald has a different plot to RS, Crystal isn't that different to GS. If I was playing "Omega Ruby" and the events of Emerald were happening, I'd be confused.

It tries to stay faithful to the originals too much even though there was a big change in 3 gens. The Exp Share for example doesn't work that well because the trainers/Gyms/rival battles were all paced without it in mind in the originals. Also the regional dex not being expanded made the pokemon choice blander and more repetitive by comparison to the recent XY, whereas the last remakes (HGSS) had a larger size than Platinum's, the then most recent game. And BW2 had an expanded dex, they could easily do the same with ORAS's. There's also the fact that there are very little sidequests to complete. Getting good berries (and therefore better pokeblocks) was kind of like a sidequest all on its own in the originals. The remakes don't offer any incentive to search for more berries (tfw it was more fun to collect them all in XY), which leads to a lesser incentive for exploration. And let's not forget how the constant handholding makes the *average player* less likely to explore as well (of course there are players who will want to explore no matter what but normal ones who are escorted here and there will not pass by a route and wonder what they can do on their way to the destination by either walking around or noticing they're missing pokemon in the dexnav, as completing the main story is their primary goal). Also the originals had contests differently. In Ruby and Sapphire each rank had its own hall, which is why there were four in total. Emerald condensed them all into one (that you couldn't get into until late game). You can also see this in Dewford Cave and the Abandoned Ship, they're very easy to navigate and doesn't force the player to think about what they're doing. ORAS keeps the RS arrangement but with Emerald's mechanics, meaning there are three completely useless buildings in Hoenn the average player will never bother setting foot in. And I deliberately talked about stuff pre-E4 because everyone and their mother have been complaining about postgame.

Gameplay wise, Battle Maison recycle instead of the Battle Frontier and keeping the Teams mirrored the same way they were in RS instead of giving them their Emerald locations. Other than that I had a lot of fun, even more so with the Dexnav. It felt great to hunt every route pokémon to see it full.

Lore wise, I had issues with the lot of teasing we got about the backstory of the members of the Teams, what with

>Team Aqua gets all the backstory mentions while Team Magma gets robots
>Project AZOTH's origins

Other than that piece of autism, it was a fun game. Would play again sometime.

Lacking the Emerald battle facility was a bit of a drag, and the obvious cut New Mauville content was a bummer. But overall it was a fantastic update that improved on almost everything and shows what a remake should be.

Easily the best game in the franchise at the moment, it just gets grief because DS kids represent most of /vp/ right now and they're in their "Pokemon changed now it sucks" phase.

Yeah I sure loved getting to Lugia/Ho-Oh before Kanto back in Crystal. Oh, wait. That's right. That didn't happen. Neither did Crystal's encounter table changes. They're still GS remakes but there's an incredibly heavy reference to Crystal included.

Basically this list here, except, I don't really care about backtracking/balance because it's optional whether you use what's given to you or not.
Also except customization because there's no reason to have it when you're remaking a game duo that had established protagonist designs and never could be customized back then.

Not possible because BF is Maison*7. On top of that many people already beat it in XY so they won't bother with it again in ORAS.

It was the only Pokémon game I had to force myself to finish. Already knowing the story and characters (due to being a remake) and the extremely low difficulty made it hard for me to care. I couldn't play the game for an hour without getting bored.

I got ORAS when it came out, played the first few gyms, and then shelved it for a few months.

When I came back and actually got into it again, I ended up really enjoying it and all the new features it added. It might just be because it was the game where I completed the most of my living dex (blissey bases, mirage islands, 0 effort egg hatching) but I love it a lot and it's one of my favorites in the series.

I know "battle frontier" is such a commonly used thing about why ORAS weren't good, but I spent dozens and dozens of hours in Emerald, Platinum, and HGSS at the battle frontier trying to get all the gold symbols and enjoying all the facilities. Once I finished the Delta episode (which was cool but was basically fly here, battle. then fly here, battle here. then fly here, etc), the only thing that was left was the battle maison. Which I played at a ton in X/Y. So I just dropped the game and that's the end.

Sun & Moon had the same problem for me, I beat the Pokemon League and all they had left was the Battle Tree, AKA the Battle Maison, AKA the Battle Tower. Just give us something new already

I have three main issues with the game:
1) No Battle Frontier. ORAS was excellent in terms of giving players the facilities to make breeding convenient: the DexNav made it easy to find HA Pokemon and Pokemon with special moves, you had a island with a day-care center and egg-hatching circle, the IV checker was close-by, Blissey bases made levelling weaker Pokemon a breeze. But all we had to use it in was a clone of the Maison. I genuinely believe that they actually intended to put the Battle Frontier in, but they basically didn't have enough time if they wanted to release it for the 2014 holiday season. They only had a year of additional development time after XY and they had to remake the rest of the game. They made the music for the Battle Resort, they remade the Frontier Brain themes and they even modeled the Battle Tower and put it in the game. But they just didn't have enough time to complete it and they'd rather release a rushed game than delay it and release a much better final product.

2) They casualised parts of the game that didn't need to be casualised at all. Granite Cave was gutted and turned into a corridor for no reason. It also meant you couldn't access certain Pokemon like Sableye and Aron without backtracking. Then they added NPCs who warp you to your next destination instead of allowing the player to explore and discover the shortcuts that opened up when you got a HM (which is one of the reasons why Hoenn is the best region in the series). Also they removed the Mach Bike segments from Sky Pillar, which was a shame since that was really satisfying to complete in the originals.

3) Other improvements from Emerald didn't return, such as better trainer teams and gym leader rematches. Emerald did a good job of making double battles more common since they were extremely sparse in RS, but ORAS didn't bother doing that. I didn't really give a shit about things like the Mirage Tower returning but I did miss the overall improvements to the trainer teams.

To sum up, I did really enjoy Alpha Sapphire and I do think some of the hate it gets here is undeserved. Some people claim its unplayable when that's certainly not true. I'd say that it's a straight upgrade over Ruby/Sapphire and while Emerald did do somethings better, it does have flaws that were fixed in later gens (a lot of Pokemon have dogshit movepools, for example). I thought the soundtrack was solid, although I feel that the soundtrack from the first 3 gens in general has been better than the soundtrack from gen 4 onwards. And I didn't even mind the graphics, I don't think any Pokemon since HGSS has had a particular amazing aesthetic and the colours were a lot more vibrant than they were in XY. And, like I mentioned above, it added a lot of features that made breeding and levelling convenient. Plus I thought the DexNav was a great idea, it was what motivated me to complete a living dex that gen. Despite the fact that it could have been a lot better with a few changes, I'd say it's one of my top 5 Pokemon game.

The worst for me is that they STILL didn't use more the megas in game.
IT'S THE GIMMICK OF GEN 6, WHY IS IT SO UNDERUSED?! FOR FUCK'S SAKE!!!

Give them after gym 5 to some trainers on the routes as "boss" (kinda like how SM did with the z crystals), to gym leaders 6 7 8, to team admins like Courtney, and the Elite Four...
Yeah, especially the FUCKING ELITE FOUR! Why the fuck are they HOLDING BACK against me? (They are using the megas only in postgame) Yooo, it's not a petty test like the gym leaders, it's the final test, it's no jokes anymore at this point man, after that we're Champion...
And the rival even use one just before that, it just doesn't make any sense that they didn't after!
