I believed this until a few years ago.

Gen I only has Aerodactyl as not-Rock/Ground you battle against and I guess I never used a Thunder-type attack against it. Gen II only has Larvitar as Rock-type and it can be easily missed.

It's a pretty common one but I used to think Rock was immune to Electric until gen 3. Geodude, Rhyhorn and Onix were all part ground. Kabuto, Omanyte were obtained very late in the games at a low level and trainers never used them so you never really tried them out in battle. Shuckle, Magcargo, Corsola and Tyranitar were pretty much never seen in gen 2 unless you explicitly hunted them down. And I never really thought to use Electric-type moves against Sudowoodo or Aerodactyl. It wasn't until my Aron got BTFO by Watson when I realised something was up.

I didn't know Fighting type was a thing until Gen 3, so I used to spam Grass and Water type attacks on Machop and its line not really playing too much attention to it.

For the record never played Gen 1 at this point, and my only exposure t OK the franchise was the Pokemon cards, and I played a bit of Silver that I never finished. So most of me knowledge came from the cards and the anime. I saw that Geodude and Machop shared the sane card color/design so I assumed they were the type, thus the sane weaknesses.

It also didn't help that Machop actually looked like it was made of rock.

Caterpie's evolution looks legit to me. It's just a coincidence that Venonat looks like Butterfree that probably happened because the designers were trying to make the Pokemon's designs consistent with each other so they look like they belong in the same world. And anyone who says that Venomoth looks like Caterpie is grasping at straws.
