I've played around 1/4th of the game, and it's so boring. The story isn't interesting at all, and the trials are really bad in my opinion.

I played it exactly 7 times. I gave it a second chance every time and i wasn't enjoying it at all. Just give up, it's not going to get any better.

Actually if you like Challenge, just expshare off battle style set. The trials won´t get much better imho, but they aren´t that bad. Story gets also much better with the time, but if you don´t like the "traveling with friends" then it´s nothing for you.

Imho there should be more interaction with hau and gladion.

I can understand finding Sun and Moon to be steps down from other games in the series, certainly, but if they seem unbelievably bad or boring to you, I gotta assume your interest in this series was held together by tape and string. In spite of everything, the gameplay is the same and most core principles of the series are in place. Samey gameplay can get boring, but it's the seventh generation of it, so if it's just hitting you now, I'm not sure that a game any more like the previous ones would be thrilling you.

Storywise its not going to get any better later on. Sun and moon are actually the first pokemon games that were so boring that I couldnt get myself to do a storyrun with each starter once. USUM will be the very first time I will ever own a litten... Yes sun and moon are that bad imho...
