what? If by "mechanical uniqueness" you mean that it reshapes itself into other pokemon using the blob as a starting point then that is just a part of the design. they could just made it glow white then transform like how pokemon evolve, that would have been poor design

I mean that it is able to breed with any pokemon that can breed, that's what people remember Ditto for (along with Imposter for the smogon crowd). People do not remember ditto for its design, which this thread is about. There is nothing impressive about a blob design-wise.

This guy is absolutely right. Ditto's simplistic design is what makes it's design so fucking memorable. ESPECIALLY the face. Fuck the transforming mechanic.

When Gen 1 came out, Ditto stood the fuck out from the rest of the Pokemon. Even from Grimer, since Grimer was understood to be a pile of sludge/grime. But Ditto? A blob of something. We still have no idea. Guarantee you that if you show a Ditto to a random person they would recognize it immediately.

And let's take a hot minute to discuss it's face. Ditto's face let's you recognize Ditto even while transformed in the anime/merch

Look at pic related. Everyone fucking knows that all of these are Ditto. Why? The face.

IF ANYTHING Ditto has an impressive concept AND design

Luxray did SOMETHING right. What it is, though, I have no idea, because it's concept is so unattached from it's design.

It sees through walls. I guess the myriad of vague X patterns across it's body are supposed to give that away, or perhaps the strange eyes that kind of stare through you.

I dunno. It's my favorite Pokemon and few people actually hate it so I guess it's enough.

The concept of a virtual Pokémon getting a virus is pretty generic but I love that the execution is just the previous evolution with all its parts in the wrong place. Like a Porygon2 was thrown in a blender and Porygon-Z was the result.

IDK about the other people in this thread... for me impressive does not necessarily mean complex. Soometimes even simplicity impresses me.
diancie and its mega evolved form for me has a complex design but nothing about it impresses me.
Aegislash is a sword and shield with intricate patterns, and it impresses me.
On the other hand, Dugtrio's design is very simple, but it doesnt impress me. Pikachu's design is really simple bt it impresses me.
