>>33705429What feels risky about it? GBA Pokémon games have kind of this flat, homogenized feeling to them, and it's also present in GBA ROM hacks. There's just this feeling that it's all tileset editing. If you look at Gen I and II (especially II), you'll easily recall moments where the tileset stood out, like in the final room of Mt. Silver, outside locations during the morning and night when the lighting was different, National Park, the Olivine Lighthouse, Moomoo Farm, the Ice Path, etc.
Also, the Sevii Islands were interesting (all seven should have been post-game) as an extension to the Kanto journey. The Tanoby Ruins, Pattern Bush, Mt. Ember, Sevault Canyon, and various other locations made for interesting exploration, especially with the event islands. Emerald just took FRLG's event content and slapped its own tileset on it. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the only event unique to Emerald was Mew, and it can be argued that it fit FRLG far better. Even Deoxys could be legitimately encountered in Kanto games before it could be legitimately encountered in Hoenn games.
But FRLG were alright. Not amazing, not terrible, but alright. I would probably put them above Emerald just because Emerald retains a lot of major game design flaws from Ruby and Sapphire. I would put Black and White on the same level as FRLG, and Diamond and Pearl above them, with Platinum above that.
