gen one fag here, how do i into new generations, should i just play through each one or are there ones i can skip, or can i just read a couple guides and jump into the newest ones?

And if you play at a casual pace UltraSun and UltraMoon will be out by the time you get to Gen 7, so you can play that instead (they're the definitive versions of Sun and Moon).

imo play whatever, most of the changes past Gen 4 are just quality of life things. If you have a 3ds then XY is actually a good place to start.
Main things to note are:
-Gen 2 added breeding mechanics (two compatible Pokemon produce and egg of the female's species) and held items
-Gen 3 added Double Battles, Natures (+/- 10% in a stat), and Abilities (unique modifiers)
-Gen 4 added Physical/Special split (types are no longer all a specific type)
-Gen 5 added Triple/Rotation Battles (removed from Sun/Moon)
-Gen 6 added Mega Evolution (super forms via held item that gives +100 to Pokemon total stats and generally new ability)
-Gen 7 added Z-Moves (super moves for massive damage/utility via held crystal, they pierce Protect to deal 25% of damage)

This will let you relive Kanto, doesn't have ALL the changes we currently have so it'll ease you in a bit, and they're solid experiences. HGSS is definitely the superior of the two so if you ONLY play one skip FRLG, but it's up to you.

If plot means nothing to you, skip this one and go straight to B2/W2. If you do care about story, you really should play this to fully appreciate the sequel. Solid games on their own, but the sequel is just the same but better.

Among the best games in the series and the pinnacle (and finale) of 2D Pokemon. A must play to be sure, and a solid plot that you CAN enjoy and understand without B/W, though playing B/W will help you appreciate it more.

>OR/AS
There's really no good reason to play X/Y unless you just don't want to play the 2D games since they're technically defunct. OR/AS aren't amazing games, but they pretty much offer everything X/Y do while doing everything at least a little better and letting you experience Hoenn and Gen 3. It's a pretty decent way to ease into 3D, and if you haven't played Emerald itself you're bound to like this more just because it won't lack any content you're use to.

You might want to hold off on this to see what people say about USM when those come out, as it may or may not be a "Just play USM instead" kind of situation. S/M are solid games but they'll let you down as much as they're impress you. They're certainly better than the Gen 6 games, though, and they're the most recent games released so it makes sense to do these last.

Trust me when i say bw2 will infuriate you if you actually play regular bw and if you think repackaging the same shit except watered down and random shit that may or may not be good in your eyes
Xy is sort of awkward in story telling since they dumped too many sidekicks that do nothing for you in the end but stop you at random intervals, other than that it's definitely not bad
But Do however, make your own opinion with what you experience personally as we only are providing our own thoughts and are not you
