It's true. The teleporting is optional, May asks you if you want to "come with her" and if you accept it teleports you to where the story wants you to be instantly.

From the evolved pokemon deep in the caves you should be exploring you dipshit. Johto is a region that rewards exploration. Also during most of Johto everything is in the 20s. Your target level before reaching the E4 is about 38.

This. GS were easily the hardest games I played through and the level curve is pretty steady throughout the game. You really do have to work for things which is what made the game so intense.

Ruby/Sapphire were by far the easiest. I plowed through the e4 with like lvl 40-45 mons, and was actually surprised it was so easy.

GS was hardest, I'd say followed by RG, then FRLG, XY might be harder though I haven't played them. Platinum was superficially hard, B2/W2 wasnt at all because I actually learned the mechanics of the game and caught high IV mons

You're not wrong that HGSS adds some annoying interruptions relative to GSC, but it's not as bad as in SM due to its lower frequency. Every generation has been worse than the last regarding cutscene interruptions, though I think it's just fine from Gen 1-3 and still tolerable in Gen 4 and 5. It'll probably continue to get even worse unless the unlikely situation of a Pokémon game financially bombing happens.
