It's just that story-driven games are much easier to make and easy for game journalists to understand and give it good scores (and to actually finish it because they can't play video games), so hack developers love to churn them out and get into a "gameplay formula" as a means of delivering their shitty stories and nothing else, as opposed to making actually good video games. Making good games is hard, churning out the same "formula" to play around with your shitty stories as players are guided through it is easy.
You wouldn't ever get /vp/ to admit to any of this because they are stuck in hardcore gamer mentality and are part of the group of people in gaming who basically enable franchises to fall into such pits in the first place, though they can only delay reality hitting developers in the face, not fully prevent it.
