Actually it could happen for Gen 8. If you think about it Ryuki clearly represents China.
He introduces himself as a "star" (chinese stars on the flag) and look at his clothes, red and yellow. Not to mention he also looks like a chinese culture dragon.

Problem with China is that its coastline is boring. Yunnan, Hunan and Hebei would all be shit for regions because the former two are landlocked and the latter almost so

Depends on where they come from. China has its own social media sites (FB is banned there) so their memes are quite different. Japan primarily uses Twitter.

I'm from Singapore where English is spoken so the memes that we're familiar with are more common

Xiamen is in Fuzhou and nowhere near Hunan.

I could see the entirety of Southern China (the round part on a map, plus Taiwan and Hainan) as a region. But not any other conformation.

Scale doesn't really matter, it's been as small as NYC to as large as France. Granted a section of China large enough to not be boring is still bigger than that, but no one's saying every aspect of the real life counterpart must be preserved.
