I generally restrict myself to whatever items the Gym Leader against me can use. Also, no saving during E4. If you lose, you have to start over.

Gym Leaders and members of the Elite Four always have one available as well, which is why I have to even the odds. If it weren't so, I wouldn't be using them at all. I don't use them in battles against regular trainers already.

Set for rivals, leaders and other plot battles only. I can't be bothered with all of the wasted turns and free hits against normal trainers I can sweep through anyway when all I want to switch for is to give something weaker XP.

You can set the battle style in the options. By default it's set to shift meaning whenever you faint an enemy's Pokemon it will tell you what the next Pokemon is and do you want an easy switch. When changed to set, it's more like a multiplayer battle where you don't have the choice of an easy switch and the Mon that is already in, stays in.

You still have RPG elements in the choices you make in team building. Pokemon's mechanics are most fun when you're on even ground and both sides can go all-out with what they have.

right now the games are based more around your endurance (making it through a route/cave/gym) so each individual battle is just a slight drain on your team's resources, namely PP and HP

even then it's not really balanced out, it is far too easy to undo any negative effects to your pokemon so now we get the worst of both worlds, simple encounters that have irrelevant consequences
