Ideologies are frequently nothing but propaganda spread by those who seek to profit from them. Occasionally they employ facts, but usually in a twisted and skewed manner that bends people to believing something based on emotions rather than facts.
The entire conservative vs liberal debate you are currently engrossed in is an engineered ideological trap. Neither side wants what's best for you. Both sides have been commandeered by one party or another to profit off of blind, ignorant faith. Faith not necessarily in religion, though it's not unheard of, but faith in a given constructed constant. As long as you are convinced that the other side is out to get you, you'll never stop and think about what your side is doing to you.
If you pay attention, in the vast majority of liberal/conservative dichotomies, both sides want to remove some rights, yet protect others. However, the "sway" of power, combined with the fact that most laws are engineered to be easy to implement, but difficult to remove, means that both sides will be able to eventually implement most, if not all of their removals of rights, while neither side will be able to effectively remove them.
But don't put your faith in me. Go look at some of the details surrounding these matters yourself. Don't go looking to prove your side right and the other wrong, or even the opposite. Go simply to find facts. What you find is what you find.
