FFS the third version always sells less than the first releases, approx half the sales.
That does not equal "flop"

And while I've noticed more bitterness in this release compared to previous 3rd games, there'll still be people who are going to buy anything that has the pokemon name on it. It just won't be (You).

It won't flop, it'll probably do about as well as any other "third version". They always undersell, despite having objective improvements. With USUM it seems especially clear that these are being put out with a lot of content that had to be cut from SM for time/cost reasons, so it's not like they're spending a lot of money producing them. It might not sell a lot but if you think it'll actually flop, as in not make back the money spent on making it, then you're retarded. There's a decently-sized subsection of this fanbase that buys every game regardless of how it actually looks. You can't really flop with that kind of consumer backing you.

"Flop" implies underperforming, and I'd find it very hard to believe that they don't have totally tempered expectations for this kind of thing by now. Every follow-up to a new generation has sold less than the first games in that generation, this is nothing new.

I think it's because we haven't have a "Malibu Stacey with Hat" third version in nearly 10 years since Platinum.

And Platinum was a good game. There was a nice challenge in those games, and lots of exploration to do. Back then, the boosted regional pokedex and slight story changes made it much more interesting to play through. Plus, Battle Frontier was back.

In the modern era, where games are piss easy and entire map sections aren't even completed (golf course, volcano interior, etc), a third version just falls flat.

the issue is that any form of relevant marketing didn't happen until 1-2months pre-release and that evidently doesn't have the same effect as hyping things from the get-go

It will flop relative to the past games. I guess the worst case is 5million sold, which is already too much for a rehash without too much change. GF will earn even if it became the worst main pokemon games in terms of sales.
