it's not a matter of it "having been true the whole time" because it's a fact that there's no evolution between cubone/marowak and kangaskhan. All it is that perhaps at some point in the game development/planning they may have been connected.

Same with butterfree and venonat, just because they might have been originally intended to be related doesn't mean it's been true the whole time that venonat evolves into butterfree.

OP, I just reached the Wela Volcano ingame and was reading Cubone's entry and wondering how that would work. Would this mean that Cubones only leave a Kanghaskhan's pouch when their mother dies? Sort of grim.

so i guess the Cubone species developed alongside the Kangaskhan family, when the mother died Cubone left the pouch, newly born as a separate species and took on a Kangaskhan skull to wear, which when it evolved it mutated into an underdeveloped Kangaskhan, now genetically different enough to be considered its own species. meaning the loss of its mother thing happened in ancient times at the earliest

the most logical explanation would be:

- gamefreak comes up with the concept of a mother/son pokemon in which the mom dies and the son wears her skull for protection and uses her bones for attack
- realizes from an in game perspective it's a logistical nightmare:
>if it goes kangaskhan > cubone > marowak the second form should have lower stats than the first and it would look weird to have the mom just disappear during the evolution scene
>if it goes cubone > marowak > kangaskhan it makes no sense to have marowak who represents the son getting over the mom's death and becoming strong just turn into a mom and have a kid pop up out of nowhere in the evolution scene
>the need to create a separate sprite of a kangaskhan without a baby for the lavender town ghost storyline to make sense
- so they just say fuck it this is too much of a hassle let's just simplify this and make them separate
- they turn kangaskhan into a normal type to further differentiate them (though they forgot to remove kangaskhan from giovanni's team in the early battles)

No, it doesn't confirm the theory but the amount of evidence is still striking.

In GSC, Cubone, Marowak, and Kangaskhan are all found in the Rock Tunnel. Curiously, in Crystal, none of these Pokemon can be encountered at night.

Speaking of which, all three Pokemon are right next to each other in the Johto Dex: Cubone line and then Kangaskhan.

In one of the B1 rooms of Union Cave, there are two trainers: one has two Marowak and the other has a Kangaskhan. No other Pokemon but them.

And now this. Not a coincidence in the stretch.

Wasnt there a bug in gen 1 where you could "evolve" Missigno into Kangaskhan.
I thought the removal of the evolution link between Marowak and Kanga was what resulted in Missgno.
Could be totaly wrong tough.

It's a nod to the theory and a reference to the fact that Kangaskhan is a mother. Marowak does not in any way resemble a Kangaskhan apart from the eyes, and angry eyes were confirmed in the game informer articles some time ago to be a design element to compensate for the limited graphics of the Game Boy that didn't allow for detailed expressions.

It makes way too much sense. Same with Psychic, the whole type was in the early gen a little bit OP, that´s why it would make sense that a gymn leader has such a pokemon. Man that is really shit.

They should have made cubone a gen 2 pokemon. With higher affection and female it becomes Kangashkan with male and less affection it becomes marowak.

Not Richard but one pokedex entry implies Marowak is a bone scavenger, maybe the same applies to Cubone and some of them may use the bones of their parents if they die.
Also I don't thin they mention in Origins that Cubone is wearing its mother skull.
