Every third version of the games hasn´t sold as good as the orginal versions. It´s every time the same thing, so nobody wonders, why people will buy this games less, than sun and moon.

I remember interviews from Masuda saying you should not expect a third version, because they are trying to explore new ways for Pokémon and we got B2/W2 which were very different from other third versions.
X/Y didn´t even get a third version, so there was the next suprise and now USUM is also a new way of third version, because they are some sort of games with new story.
People nowadays keep using this "argument" for years, it´s like you can explain everything with the quote "it all comes together" from sun and moon.
