First off, pic unrelated. Sorry to anyone looking for a Looker thread.

Anyway, I'm working on a Pokemon fangame right now, and I want to know -- what features would make for the ideal Pokemon game? I can't really do anything big like an all region MMO, and already have the overall plot done, minus quite a few details, along with a bit of world building. I'm just wondering what features you here would consider essential for a Pokemon game. If anyone's interested in plot details/region details or any early designs for things, I'm down to post stuff. Just want more ideas and such rather than "check out my cool fan game that I might not ever finish, and will be taken down by Nintendo on launch!". I'm just looking to throw some ideas around.

And also, sorry about posting this in that Dulse thread to anyone who saw this there. Both very tired and very sick right now, and am already a bit retarded to begin with.

I think what makes fangames successful is new content. Something as simple as new megas, evolutions, or regional variants would be really cool.

But honestly just make it challenging and do everything gf does wrong, right.

If you manage those you're already better than almost every fangame created
I doubt you can do such a big project alone though, if I were you I'd find some other people. It takes a lot more than just planning

I personally love seeing new stuff in fangames -- usually. I can think of a decent amount of bad megas and an unspeakable number of fakemon.

I definitely do plan on having new megas and new regional variants, but I don't want to introduce any completely new Pokemon. I feel like it's hard to create a completely new design that truly feels "Pokemon" without it being outlandish, especially considering the fact that many claim Gamefreak's designs aren't even truly Pokemon anymore.

I definitely do want the game to be a decent challenge. I don't really feel like the modern Pokemon games give much of a challenge, but it definitely wouldn't hurt if you couldn't steamroll with a team of four decently leveled Pokemon, too.

First off, the story: I've decided I want the story to have a bit of darker tones to it, but nothing edgy. Think Earthbound -- overall, the game is fairly childish, but there's a few dark moments every here and there.

Right now, I have it set where rather than playing as a child on his first Pokemon adventure, you're a rookie officer joining the police force in a region based around California, Nevada, and other neighboring areas. I think this allows for a bit more of adult themes and darker moments, but I don't want to do anything edgy. No (explicit) death, guns, etc. Maybe a cigar on a character at most.

The designs: I've been drafting designs over and over again with a few friends and my younger sister. I don't really have much more to say about this other than I'm very picky about good design.

Anyway, to finish off this post, I said this game would be based around California/Nevada/etc. One of the areas included in this game would be the La Bera Tar Pits, and there, you can find a regional variant of Pyroar. Included this picture is a rough draft of what we might be doing for the design, by my aforementioned younger sister. His mane is in the shape of the kanji for "ground" rather than "fire" -- this was honestly part of what sold me on the design.

Jokes aside, my ideal Pokémon game would be like the following:

On the "good exploration and variety": I do want to have a sizeable amount of side quests, and I want to reward exploration. California and its neighboring regions already have a lot of good areas for that variety -- mountain ranges, deserts, the redwood forests, and I could list many more. One of my favorite memories of a Pokemon game was finding Turnback Cave in D/P in the post game, without having used the internet or anything else to tell me where it was. The cave itself... not so much. But it was still a very cool feeling to find something like that on my own.

At one point, I even considered a boat ride to another, smaller region based on either Alaska or New Zealand. This has fallen through, though. It's honestly a bit hard to find places to put Pokemon where it would make sense, but I think I have almost every type figured out.

"The plot you have is kind of cool": Thanks! That's cool to hear. Another big part of the plot is, rather than taking on gyms, in their place will be evil team hideouts that you have to bust. They'll be similar to gyms, but with a lot more story around them. And to go back to the sidequests, the region also has its own gym/league that can optionally be taken on.

"Do you have any more Pokemon designs?": Sadly, no, I don't really have anything visual, but I do have a few ideas in my head I've been meaning to draw out. I can try to describe a few though. Durant-C, based on the fire ants that were imported into California and infested it not too long ago, being Fire/Bug type. Of course, it'd be receiving a Heatmor-C to go along with it, that'll be pure Rock type. A Sneasel/Weavlie, based on the Native Americans, equipped with a much more colorful headdress of feathers and face paint. Grass/Fighting. I'm scared that one could be deemed offensive in this day and age, though. Anyway, at the length limit, so that'll end here.

It's good to see you have a general idea on how you want to handle the stuff I adressed.
By the way, that Sneasel idea is extremely interesting. Don't scrap it, go on with it; the only people who would complain are noisy troublemakers. People with actual Native American heritage wouldn't mind at all.

Also, I'm glad to hear you like the idea for the Sneasel. I do think I'm going to follow through with it just because Weavile is one of my favorite Pokemon, and also just because I like the idea.

To go back to designs, I'm also going to have megas -- going to have one for each evil base admin rematch's ace Pokemon, and one for each gym leader's rematch, totaling at least 16, probably with a few more thrown in also. Some of these Pokemon include Beheeyem, Honchkrow, Excadrill, and Cacturne. Here's an (incredibly) early concept for Beheeyem-M. We're thinking some sort of mothership typed theme to go with the whole alien thing. Probably won't be piloting the mothership, also, but will instead physically become the mothership. Definitely far from final design on this guy.

Like the idea, if you ever get this made I'd play it. I actually love games that have a basis in real life over science fiction/fantasy.

I think just do everything well that the 3D games don't.

Have multiple areas for side exploration, make the mazes and puzzles actually involve thinking and not just a linear path, no awful exposition in the story dialogue (since it's based on real life place and cops you can even include humorous satirical elements kind of like GTA, but not as adult obviously). Have variation between towns, cities, locations. Don't just have desert everywhere. Speaking of GTA, San Andreas is based on the same locations and has a variety through the whole state, like cities, desert, countryside, suburbs.

Fanmade designs are a hit or miss, I dislike a majority of fakemon cause they don't look like genuine pokemon. The regional forms are the best variation (the Sneasel idea is pretty cool). Also if you're going to have new mons, make sure they are easily obtainable! Otherwise people are just going to use the existing mons anyway..

Also, have a good AI and make it generally challenging, but also provide ways to ease up the challenge, like offer EXP share but make it completely opt in rather than forcing it on you, and optional grinding spots.
