It's a bit silly because it creates a sort of paradox: it needs to evolve to break the mask, but the qualifier for it evolving is having broken the mask. It breaks the mask because the mask has been broken, it evolves because it has evolved. It's an unfortunate side effect of the way the game mechanics work. If they wanted to be clever they could have done something like make the mask a held item that can't be removed until it reaches a certain friendship level, whereupon it's destroyed permanently, but that would have been awkward to implement.
