I never understood how people can choose Blastoise in a region full of top tier Water Pokémon like Gyarados, Lapras, Starmie and many others. Even Tentacruel was better than it in the original games.

Starmie is late game, Tentacool was shit in a gen where Psychic was what it was. Lapras is late, and underlevelled. Gyarados is tough to get, and EVERYONE has done it.
Really, this is my argument against ever choosing the water starter. It holds in every game not named Black and White, where it is still close.

In B/W, there was a shitload of amazing Grass types to choose from, and generally Darumaka was better than Tepig in every way.

For FireRed/LeafGreen, Bulbasaur is the best choice as a starter, no doubt.

For Blue/Red, Squirtle is the best starter.

For competetive, all have their uses.

In terms of design, Venusaur and Blastoise are way cooler than Charizard. Charizard is okay, but uninspired. It's just a dragon.

Isn't Gyrados kind of shit in gen 1, 2 and 3, though? Since it's before the special/physical split, and it doesn't get a good Flying move either. I love its design, but I remember it being very underwhelming after all the effort I put into grinding from a level 5 Magicarp I bought from the con-man.

I will always be a Charizard fan, but ever since Mega Venusaur I've been kinda red pilled on the Bulbasaur line being awesome.

I'm a grass starter guy in almost every game but if it weren't for Charmander nostalgia, Venusaur would totally be my go-to in Gen 1.

Charizard is by default the worse since the only way to salvage it is by introducing not 1, but 2 megas to be viable. At least Blastoise is aware of its status.

Design-wise, it's still the worse. There's nothing innovative or exciting about a pregnant lizard with wings. Oh wait, it got a fire on its tail, very groundbreaking.

Venusaur was good in the rby early game, but later its poison typing was a disgrace.
Charizard was mostly useless.
Blastoise was the best for first time players until you get a better water type.
They all became good in game by the time frlg was out.
That said i played yellow first, so i didn't have a favourite until gen iii, where Venusaur got me, even if i picked Charmander in game.

also Look at its shit Gen1 stats that they forced GF to give it a boost together with lamestoise to stand a chance.

it was supposed to be an offensive pokemon but its 85 special stats were much lower than venusaur's 100, it was a garbage dragon that couldn't even fly and much weaker than a plant dinosaur, how pathetic.

Venusaur in the other hand was good enough to not receive stat boosts like a filthy weak Shitizard.

Also that shitizard took full 6 generation to be remotely good. have you no brain to process this before making a meme?

Don't forget that if you choose Charmander in RBY, you're stuck with ember as your only fire move until you either beat Blaine for fire blast or get to level 44 for flamethrower.
