sprite work is too expensive/time consuming + now they're moving to switch, an HD console, VERY unlikely they will go back to sprites

The initial model work took much longer.
XY had 500 people working on it, and that's largely the reason why 3DS gen has been so criticized -- they're used to working in smaller teams.

The graphics will stagnate now. Sun/Moon already just used XY's artstyle for the photoshoot thing except for the entire overworld and the future games will just use the same artstyle as Sun/Moon except at a higher resolution.
