It was a blatant cashgrab though. The difference is that Game Freak had no other option back then because they couldn't deliver software updates once the game had hit the shelves. Since you're underage, you probably won't remember a time like this.

Yes because unlike the download I will be able to get legal copies of the physical update in the distant future, and I can fall back onto the outdated version for any discrepancies I may sometimes prefer or be able to take advantage of.

It's not like they had a fucking manual for how to do the updated versions. It added some features and was a really convenient way to get all the starters in GSC if you'd actually played through it by then.

At a time when creating a DLC or updating via the internet was impossible so making a new version made sense.

Now it is 2017. If you are going to add minimal features to a game, do it over the internet and charge $15 for it instead of being a jew.

See Street Fighter, they used to do progressive version but have adjusted their business model to modern times and found a way to extend the lifetime of a game while making money and getting funds to actually improve it and tweak the balance.

I agree it was more of a bugfix/cashgrab release than anything, though.
