Ash was only OK because the alpha male (Brock) was there to keep him in line. Once Ash lost Brock, he tried to assume the alpha role, but just like any beta male, he could never succeed. This marked a clear downward slope for his character.

Yeah, but it was revealed right from the start Dawn would be a coordinator and not do Gyms, so once that was shown it was obvious Ash would still be the lead. It's obvious whoever does the Gyms would still be the lead.

Well that's my point, people were bored to death back then of Brock's constant returns only for him to do nothing. We had already been sitting through Brock for all of Johto and AG by then. DP could have used a new male companion.

Theoretically I could have seen Dawn or May do Gyms along with Contests, but I guess it would have taken too much focus away from Ash so they didn't.

This. DP should've been "Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: The Dawn Chronicles." She could've done both contests and gyms, made it to the Pokémon League, and battled Ash in the semifinals, with Ash having journeyed across Sinnoh off-screen.

Ash Vs. Paul should have been the finals of the Sinnoh league with Ash winning. Tobias never existed, and Ash would go on to battle Cynthia in a Champion league.

Because Ash still had a character arc going in DP. If they didn't wrap him up in OS, or AG...then DP was one of the best times to.
