Alolan Exeggutor strikes me as the least Dragon-y looking Dragon-type in the game.

What would the best examples be for all the other types?

Honestly Reshiram doesn't strike me as a fire type.

In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the only Fire type that isn't explicitly orange/red, aside from the weird cases like Alola Marowak, Zen Darminitan, and Chandelure. (but two of those have obvious quirks that indicate fire)

I vote Dhelmise for that. When I first saw it, I thought it was going to be a combo of any of the types Water, Steel or Ghost. Grass, I wouldn't have guessed.

Fair enough, but you really only notice that (outside of fugly cutscenes) in a post-sprite era, and subsequent media featuring Reshiram. The official art for the character and party sprite is just a white, fluffy dragon with blue eyes.

I always picked Zekrom and it's easy for me to forget that Reshiram has a fire generating tail...And now that I think about it, this feels like a reverse scenario of the issue with Typhlosion transferring from 2D to 3D.

But to be fair, that's the point of Lurantis, and Kartana DOES look like a Grass-type if you think a bit abstract and think of paper.

Dhelmise has seaweed ON it, but nobody would have assumed the seaweed was directly part of the Pokemon to the point it'd be Grass type.

Rockruff and Lycanroc for Rock type. I know they have the rock necklaces but when almost everything else in the type is a Rock monster or a fossil mon, they stand out. Archeops and Aurorus also don't look that much like Rock types, but they're fossils anyway.

Greninja literally looks like a thief or a ninja. It's crouched in a stealthy, combat-like position. It's very thin, and it has a weeb ninja scarf.

Nihilego... looks JUST LIKE... a jellyfish. Granted they wouldn't know it's parasitic, jellyfish are well known to have toxins.

Granbull being retconned into a Fairy-type because it's pink. There is nothing fairy-esque about it aside from being pink. Fairy is one of the least consistent typing anyway. Anything "cute" or pink has the potential to be a fairy.

It helps if you remember that it's not really a dog. It's a dragon creature thingy using its dragon cells to assume the SHAPE of a dog. It's not a literal canine with fur. If you saw a Zygarde 10% irl, it would more than likely be covered in dragon scales.

Just imagine fine scales all over Altaria's body. The artists/designers don't do a great job at emphasizing the scaly factor of dragon types in the illustrations. That's what confuses people who aren't very imaginative or creative. They'll only understand if the Pokemon blatantly resembles a Western dragon.

But within the context of the Pokemon world, Palkia doesn't have anything to do with actual pearls or water, whereas Dialga literally has some metallic stuff on its body and Giratina is shown to have a non-corporeal form (plus its wings seem to be the same deal).

This description totally makes me think of Granbull. Truly Granbull represents a green bull that resembles a wolf.

As I said, fairy gets slapped on anything pink and then the explanation for it is some vague mythical reference that looks like it could maybe possibly fit if you squint hard enough.

The long neck gives it the appearance of a brontosaurus, and dinosaurs and dragons are often treated similarly in fiction. Plus it's multi-headed, a trait of dragons such as hydras or the modern interpretation of Tiamat thanks to D&D.

i believe zekrom and reshiram's non-dragon types are based on elements that fuel different kinds of engines (e.g. electricity and fire), hence their tails being literal turbo engines that power up via wire-looking cords that attach to the tails

Granbull for whatever reason was thought to be 'Fairy' in someway to Gamefreak from its conception based on its category name which is consistent across Japanese to English.

It feels intuitively more 'magical' than most other psychic types and in folklore fairies love fucking with people exactly in the way Mimey does, through creating the appearance of things not really present or presenting things not as they are/not really there, I.e. the gourmet food and luxurious clothes of some types of fairies are merely an enchantment of sight, undone if a human eats of their fairy host's food or puts on their clothes.

My gripe is why, if Mimey got Fairy, why didn't Hypno? This thing looks straight up goblin-y and its creepy habits of eating the dreams of captured children is Fairy for days.

The best autistic explanation for the Dragon type as an element rather than physical descriptor is interpreting it as a "life energy" and "potential/power" type. This goes along with Lucario learning Dragon Pulse and Dragon's weakness to Ice as a sort of "coldness is the absence of energy" thing, although obviously the original intent was because reptiles are always weak to Ice in games.

So for A-Exeggutor, the stronger sunlight and less pollution in Alola allowed it to grow to its full potential. This also goes along with why it's frequently a type gained upon evolution or mega evolution, because the Pokemon initially didn't have enough power to reach its full potential.

Pseudos and late game mons like Haxorus/Noivern are full of energy because they are [supposed to be] more powerful than the average Pokemon. Drampa and Turtonator are long-lived. Spacetime trio are embodiments of the primordial energies that gave life to the universe. Tao trio are obviously tied to energy. Zygarde is an avatar of hippie nature energy or whatever. Guzzlord seems to be literally full of energy as it has that internal glow and apparently perfectly converts all food to energy with 0 waste material.

Also consider if moves like Outrage represent being full of bestial power.

Game Freak is really cruel to dual-type Electric. 3 are Pikaclones. 1 is an Oricorio form. 1 is a type retcon (if Magnemite were added today I bet you it'd be pure Steel). 1 is a Mega. 2 are Alolan Forms. Most of the rest are legendary.

As far as I can tell, that leaves Chinchou, Rotom, Stunfisk, and Helioptile as the only times they made "regular" Pokemon as dual-type Electrics. And Stunfisk was likely the result of Gen 5 adding new type combos for the sake of it, as we know was the case for Jellicent. Oh and speaking of Rotom FOUR Electric type combos are exclusive to this ONE Pokemon.

You left off Galvantula and Vikavolt but yeah, they don't really like pairing Electric outside of pikaclones which are gimmick trash (Dedenne almost was good aside from no Fairy STAB then Tapu Koko utterly outclassed it, Togedemaru doesn't have Steel STAB to capitalise on and just isn't powerful enough). Aside from you know, the one weakness aspect, Electric types are pretty cucked:

>physical electric moves are trash
>Usually weak stats outside of Spe and sometimes SpA/Atk
>Weak to Earthquake: one of the most common, powerful, completely accurate moves in the game.
>STAB is not great for Choice items because of Ground types.

Eh I mean Magnemite's elctro-magnetic aspects are pretty well developed compared to other magnet mons so pure Steel would probably be weird. (its Japanese names refer to eletromagnetic coils too)

I dunno why people don't talk about how Electric is kind of bad, at least the way Gamefreak uses it (surprise surprise)

It looks 0% Ghost type. What could have been interesting is if they played on the autumn aspect more, vaguely gestured towards with its wilting bow tie. Again, headcanon. It could be an entirely avian dragon and there's no evidence of scales. In fact -ate abilities in Japanese are "__ skin." Pixilate is Fairy Skin. So it's unlikely to have draconic skin.

This has always been a shit theory and it is entirely based on circular logic.
Nothing about Palkia's lore or design indicate that it is supposed to represent the state of liquids. People are claiming Dialga/Palkia/Giratina are Steel/Water/Ghost because they're based on solids/liquids/gases, but when asking how they're supposed to be based on those aspects they claim they're based on solids/liquids/gases because they're Steel/Water/Ghost.

I agree.

I always thought Dialga was Steel because a) diamonds are one of the hardest materials known to man and b) the rigidity of time; likewise, Palkia is Water because a) pearls come from the sea and b) there is a certain fluidity of space. Giratina is Ghost because it represents antimatter, something out-of-this world. The solid/liquid/gas theory is just retrofitting the types to an existing pattern, although I will admit it tidily does so.

I was saying it easily could pass for a feathery, bird-like dragon if you imagined its skin as fine dragon scales with a soft layer of downy feathers covering its body. Avian dragons do exist after all; however, most people only think of the stereotypical, scaly Western types whenever they hear "dragon," so imagining Altarias with scaly skin underneath their feathers might help put those people's mind at ease. If that doesn't work for you, fine. It's just, most people only see things and take them at face value without taking into account the nuances of what they're looking at. I personally like to envision what an Altaria might look like if it were real, which is where the dragon scale thing came from. However, I don't care if it's draconic, avian, or whatever, as things like that don't bother me. It could've been Ghost type for all I care, and I wouldn't bat an eye. Giritina is "Dark Matter/Energy" (Don't know what the fuck it is, but it is balancing our universe somehow)

I think the creation trio's secondary typing of Steel/Water/Ghost is supposed to represent the matter trio of solid/liquid/gas.

It could also be related to diamonds being hard like steel, pearls being found underwater, and Giratina living in a world where life besides it doesn't exist.
