Lucario had marketing, an ingame event, and was top tier in its generation. They didn't even put the same level of effort into Zoroark.

The design has absolutely no mass appeal. It's kind of ugly, honestly. Lucario's design is strange, but I can still see why it appeals to young teens and kids. It targets a cool factor.

I don't think Zoroark's design is bad, it's just not very marketable. I said it's ugly, but in more of a monstrous way. It has an evil look.

Probably because it was blatantly obvious their promotions were trying to recreate Lucario's success and force it into popularity. When GameFreak noticed the fanbase wasn't biting, they shifted gears to promoting Zekrom, who had already achieved popularity naturally.

That's the irony about Zoroark: despite the Spanish root in its name, it's too Japanese of a concept to catch onto. Bearing themes of Noh and Kabuki theater as well as classical Kitsune mythos means the appeal is quickly lost to all but the truest of weebs.

You were more or less handed lucario in DPPt. In order to get it you needed a event mon and then transfer it to BW sure in BW2 it's easy but still. Also the gimmick was screwed due to team preview

This, right here. This is what sank it. Locking this motherfucker behind an event wall didn't make it popular. It made it irrelevant.

Man, fuck event exclusivity. So goddamn stupid. Fuck off with the gamestop codes, fuck off with movie only giveaways. Just do Magearna style QR codes, or online mystery gifts. And stop just handing us the fucking pokemon, it's boring. Add a little miniquest like catching Mew on Faraway Island or sleeping in the motel to get Darkrai.
