Story isn't bad, pretty good, but not great. My one complaint is the start of the game, it treats you like a stupid kid (literally)
Once you get to the main town is when it becomes good IMO.
Characters are likeable IMO, especially the partner, it's the best partner in the series, they're a fully developed character though honestly they completely fuck it up with the ending.
gameplay has it's good points and points, recruiting is pretty stupid in this one compared to the other ones, you can basically get helpers instead of actual recruits, e.g you can get a level 50 salamence very early in the game. Granted these guys have cooldown timers after you bring but still it's pretty stupid IMO.
Overall, it's probably the 3rd best in the series PMD2 > PMD > PSMD > the shitty one.
But since you haven't played any other PMD, I would suggest PMD:Sky with an emulator or WiiU Eshop. PSMD has a lot of references to older games so it'd be cool if they didn't go over your head.
