They used to let down their global playerbase even more than this some time ago.
Besides this there are many things and details that they never fix or improve, no decent company would allow something like this to be.
The real reason behind all of this is because nintendo and pokemon are both unique and don't have any DIRECT competition.
This is why they don't need to have their shit together.
Just look at any field with vicious competition. Smartphones for example. Smartphone brands introduce new stuff all the time and pay attention to extreme details.
Game freak could release pokemon "Turd and Piss" and they would still sell a lot of them.
